TMS 2008 Materials Bowl

MAXIMUM VALUE: $2,500

The second annual Materials Bowl is coming to the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana. Material Advantage chapters are invited to select a team of chapter members to represent your school in a “Jeopardy”-style knowledge and trivia competition. Teams will compete in elimination rounds, a semi-final match and championship game. Each chapter may enter one team of two-to-four students. The team may consist of all undergraduate students or a mix of undergraduates with up to two graduate students.

When
The Materials Bowl will take place on Sunday,March 9, 2008, at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel. The championship game will take place during the student networking mixer on Sunday evening.

Prizes: Each member of the winning team will receive $250, and the winning chapter will receive $1,500. The second place team will receive $1,000 for the chapter.

How to Apply
To participate, a team must have its student chapter chairperson or faculty advisor complete and submit the official Materials Bowl application.

TMS Technical Division Student Poster Contest

Poster Awards
The five technical divisions of TMS are very excited to sponsor the student poster contest at the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to participate in this dynamic and interactive event. Each of the technical divisions will award $500 to the best undergraduate poster and $500 to the best graduate poster. A top prize of $2,500 will be awarded by TMS for the “Best of Show” poster.

Ambassador Awards
Judges will select two student authors from among the poster award winners to receive the TMS Student Ambassador awards. The "ambassadors" will receive sponsorship from TMS to represent the society at a 2008 international conference to be named at a later date. Two alternate ambassadors will also be chosen in the event the initial award winners are unable to attend the conference.

Contest Participant Qualifications
In addition to developing poster presentations of technical interest to individuals in the various technical divisions, participants must satisfy the following qualifications:

• Authors must be full-time students who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees.
• Authors must register to attend the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition and be present to put-up and take-down the posters.
• Authors must be present during a scheduled “Exhibit Showing” (similar to a science fair) to answer questions and discuss their work.
• Each author may use up to a 45” x 45” space. If poster exceeds this space, it will be neither presented nor eligible for contest. (Authors are assigned display numbers prior to the conference to designate where presentations should be posted.)
• Visual aids that could clarify the results of your own work are encouraged. Do not, however, post your paper text. Graphics should be simple, colorful, well labeled and clear. The title should be written in letters 2- to 5-cm high, and all material should be readable from a distance of 2 m.

The society's technical divisions typically offer a limited number of travel grants of $500 each to student members interested in attending the TMS annual or fall meetings. At present, this assistance is provided by the

Your letter should mention the division's technical programming in which you are interested. Applications will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the appropriate sponsoring division, and this group will select the award recipients. Students receiving travel grants are responsible for making their own meeting registration and travel arrangements.

Sponsored by the Powder Metallurgy Committee of the TMS Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division, the annual Powder Materials Student Presentation Contest honors the best technical presentation at a TMS-sponsored meeting by a student in the powder materials field. The winner receives a $500 travel stipend in order to present the paper at the Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) conference held in the fall.

Eligibility: The presentation must be made by an undergraduate or graduate student on his/her powder-based materials research. It must pertain to the field of powder materials synthesis, processing and/or characterization and be presented either at a Powder Materials Committee-sponsored symposium or a TMS general abstract session at MS&T.

To Apply: Both an abstract of the proposed presentation and a completed Application Form must be submitted to the chair of the Powder Materials Committee by February 15 of the year in which the paper will be presented. The abstract and application may be e-mailed via the Powder Materials Committee Web page. The committee will review all applications and announce the winner by e-mail at least two weeks before the abstract submission deadline for MS&T. The award check will be presented at the Powder Materials Committee meeting held at MS&T. For more information, contact the chair of the Powder Metallurgy Committee.

NOTE: Applying for this award does not enter the abstract into the TMS Conference Management System (CMS-Plus). All applicants seeking to present papers at MS&T—including the travel award winner—must also submit their abstracts through CMS-plus before the abstract deadline. The winner must attend MS&T and present his/her paper in order to receive the $500 travel award.

Sponsored by the TMS Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division, the Electronic Materials Best Paper contest presents two $250 cash prizes annually to the best student paper
