Outstanding Student Paper Contest

In addition to the academic scholarships and other competitions sponsored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, the society offers student members the opportunity to participate in the Outstanding Student Paper Contest.

COMPETITION DETAILS AND GUIDELINES
Undergraduate Division

MAXIMUM VALUES
1st place: $1,000
2nd place: $500

This contest is open to essays on global or national issues as well as technical research papers. Papers relating to any field of metallurgy or materials science will be considered. Students are encouraged to display original thought and creativity in the development of the essays, which should include a comprehensive bibliography on which the paper is based.

Graduate Division

MAXIMUM VALUES
1st place: $1,000
2nd place: $500

Papers should be of a technical/research nature and may deal with any of the following disciplines:

  • Physical and mechanical metallurgy
  • Extractive and process metallurgy
  • Materials science.

A paper submitted in this division may be written from material contained in a student's masters or Ph.D. thesis.

To enable recipients to receive the award in person, $250 of each prize is to be used to offset travel expenses.

Eligibility Requirements
  • The applicant must be a member of the Material Advantage student program. (A student membership application may accompany the award submission.)
  • Papers must be unpublished as of the submission deadline date.
  • Only one paper contest entry per student is acceptable.

Submission Guidelines

As there is no application form to complete, please prepare your submission according to the following guidelines:

  • The paper should be prepared by one author. It should be the original work of that author as far as possible. If a faculty member is listed as co-author, include a letter from the faculty member confirming that you are the primary author.
  • Papers must be typed, double-spaced, on 8 1/2" x 11" paper and must be submitted in triplicate.
  • Papers must be written in English, utilizing good communication skills and quality photocopying. Poor copies of figures and texts are unacceptable.
  • The paper should be neither less than 2,000 nor more than 4,000 words.
  • A cover letter from a faculty member should be included with each entry, verifying your graduate or undergraduate status and original contribution.
  • The front page of the entry should specify whether you are entering the undergraduate or graduate division as well as the subject discipline. The front page should also include your complete address, telephone, fax, and e-mail information.
  • You must be prepared to submit the paper electronically as winning papers are adapted for presentation on the TMS web site.
