“The membership in TMS
gives me exposure to life as a materials professional and to current issues
in materials through the society’s technical journal, JOM. I am also looking
forward to attending the conference next March, which has been made possible
through the scholarship award. Attending such a conference will be a new experience
for me, and I think I will learn a lot about the role of materials scientists
and engineers in industry as well as in academia. Finally, I am very grateful
to the society for their support of my education through this scholarship.”
“TMS membership
allows me to begin my professional career as an engineer while still in school.
Through publications and conferences, I will learn more about my field, keep
up with current technology, and gain direction for my career goals. Most of
all, receiving the TMS/ EMPMD Gilbert Chin Award has renewed my faith that I
can attain the goals I set for myself.”
“It is a great honor
for me to accept the TMS/EPD scholarship award. This award greatly encourages
me to pursue a career in the field of materials engineering while striving for
excellence in the classroom and in the working environment. Obtaining this award
has helped me gain a great deal of confidence and maturity, which I believe
to be very beneficial for my future career.”
“I am very pleased
to accept the award. It provides tremendous financial help. In addition, it
is a great honor to be recognized by an international organization.”
Light Metals Division Scholarship
Bert W. Cantu, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
“Both the LMD Scholarship
and my TMS membership help reinforce the benefits that are acquired from hard
work and determination. The materials industry is a very complex and competitive
world. In order to be competitive, one must keep up to date with advances in
technology. With this scholarship, it is my intent to pursue advanced publications
and other information to help give myself the added edge to succeed. Also, a
special thank you must be conveyed to my departmental professors for my accomplishments
thus far.”
“As a recipient of
the LMD/TMS scholarship for 2000, I am very excited to pursue a career in materials
science and engineering. I appreciate the warm welcome to this field and I look
forward to contributing to TMS in the future.”
“I believe that becoming
a member of TMS is a good way to begin an engineering career because it brings
me up to date with the new research in the materials industry. I am grateful
to receive a TMS scholarship; it enables me to focus on my studies without having
to worry about financial problems. Maybe, in the future, being a TMS member
will give me the opportunity to meet other engineers by attending conferences
and other meetings.”
“I am honored to receive
this prestigious award. In recognizing my accomplishments and efforts, the award
will also help me in my education, allowing me to further contribute to the
field of materials science and engineering. My membership in TMS has given me
this opportunity as well as various opportunities to expand my knowledge of
materials.”
“Winning the SMD
scholarship is a great honor. I am very appreciative of the society’s faith
in me. I hope to earn that trust with continued scholarship and interest in
metallurgy.”
“Throughout my university
career TMS membership provided me with a view of the industry I was about to
enter, allowing me to make an informed decision on what areas of interest I
should concentrate on. This perspective was provided through the supply of free
JOM publications to the university and significant funding opportunities for
field trips. Now that I enter into the field and pursue a career in materials
engineering this award gives me confidence in my endeavors.”
Undergraduate Outstanding Student Paper
Second Place: Jonathan Thomas, Drexel University
“My TMS membership
connects me with professionals in the materials industry. After graduation,
the membership will continue my learning and keep me up to date on many areas
of research. This award is graciously accepted with an eagerness to be a part
of the TMS conference in Nashville.”
“It is a great honor
to be recognized by TMS with this award. Without the support and guidance of
my advisor, Garry W. Warren, this achievement would not have been possible.
This award provides further motivation and encouragement to develop a better
job in the future. I shall give God all the credits.”
“It is a pleasant
feeling being selected by TMS for this award. I would like to thank my guide,
Atul H. Chokshi, for making this possible. Further, I would like to see more
of my friends win these prizes from TMS. Finally, I appreciate TMS for its efforts
in encouraging students working on the three M’s!”
“It is an honor for
me and my university to be selected as the recipient of the TMS Superalloys
Scholarship. I thank TMS for this prestigious award. The TMS membership has
provided me with many opportunities to keep in touch with the professional world.
Thank you, TMS, for your part in taking me closer to the ‘real’ world.”
“This award further
motivates and financially supports me to continue learning about superalloys
and materials. It also rewards me for being a TMS member and for my intention
in life long learning.”
