This story appears in The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's student newsletter Professional Preface, vol. 12, no. 1. |
Every year the Materials Advantage student chapters are recognized for increasing their membership through the month of October. The winners are chosen in two categories—most creative and greatest percentage increase in membership:
Most Creative
For 2004, Iowa State University won
for most creative by conducting many activities and events to promote awareness as well as
gain new members. Some of these activities included a pizza party, a Material Advantage business
meeting with a speaker from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, a joint
meeting with the ASM Iowa Professional Chapter, a chapter visit to Ohio State University,
working with Habitat for Humanity, conducting demonstrations for middle school students,
and fund-raising activities such as t-shirt and pizza sales and a dunk tank.
Greatest Increase
The winner of the
greatest percentage increase of membership went to South Dakota School of Mines with a
41% increase in membership. Congratulations to both of these schools.
