New TMS Student Competitions Planned for 2006

Creativity is the key to showing off your research and development skills. In 2006, TMS is planning a host of student competitions to showcase (and reward) student creativity. First, new division-sponsored poster competitions will inspire students from every technical area to display their research. Each of the five technical divisions within TMS has stepped forward to sponsor a competition for both undergraduate and graduate students. The five technical divisions are:

        • Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (EMPMD)
        • Extraction & Processing Division (EPD)
        • Light Metals Division (LMD)
        • Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division (MPMD)
        • Structural Materials Division (SMD)

Each division plans to offer a $500 prize to undergraduate students and a $500 prize to graduate students for the best poster entered related to the division’s focus. Additionally, a $2,500 prize will be awarded by the society to the overall best poster. A formal showing is planned to allow students the opportunity to answer questions and show off their hard work to judges (and potential employers).

Next, a brand new student design competition is under construction that will increase teamwork and group interactions in Material Advantage clubs for students of all ages. We expect to see some real flexibility in projects that will allow students to do something that they want to do, rather than have to do.
