And the awards go to . . .

One of the benefits TMS student members enjoy is the opportunity to earn money for college through scholarships and student contests.

Scholarships are awarded annually to graduate and undergraduate student members. Visit the Student Awards page for information on awards, competitions, and scholarships.

The following are this year’s winners:

Recipient PhotoTMS J. Keith Brimacombe Presidential Scholarship
Rachel Maire, California Institute of Technology

“I am honored to win the 2006 J. Keith Brimacombe TMS Presidential Scholarship. This award facilitates the continuation of my education in materials science. I would like to thank Dr. Irma Talmy and Dr. Jim Zaykoski of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, for introducing me to materials science and Dr. Brent Fultz, Dr. Bill Johnson and Dr. Dale Conner of the California Institute of Technology for guiding me through my materials science education and research. I plan on becoming a socially responsible materials scientist.”

“I am incredibly honored to receive this award. The recognition is greatly appreciated and makes all the hard work even more satisfying. This award has also given me the confidence to pursue graduate studies—a path I was previously unsure about. The support and acknowledgement that TMS gives all students is amazing and really makes a difference in peoples’ lives. Thanks.”

Recipient PhotoTMS Outstanding Student Paper, Undergraduate Division 2nd Place
Cary Pint, University of Northern Iowa

“This award is very meaningful to me, as it rewards the hard work that went into my research. I am really honored to have my work chosen for such a prestigious award.”

Recipient PhotoElectronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division Gilbert Chin Scholarship
David Gray, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

“This award is a great honor to me; it symbolizes the reward of dedication and motivates me to reach higher. Yet, I know this award would not have come without the help of many great people. Thank you.”

Recipient PhotoExtraction & Processing Division Scholarship
Michael Bonici, McGill University

“I am honored to have been selected as one of the TMS Extraction & Processing Division award recipients. It is truly encouraging to feel this kind of support as a student. This award acknowledges my efforts, consequently giving me additional incentive to work hard. Financially, this award will help fund my education, giving me more time to focus on school.”

Recipient PhotoExtraction & Processing Division Scholarship
Deborah Carlson, South Dakota School of Mines

“I feel very fortunate and privileged to have been selected to receive this scholarship. I am grateful for the support from TMS that provides financially for my education and allows me to pursue my degree in Metallurgical Engineering. It is a great honor to be recognized in this way and I would like to thank TMS for all its assistance in helping me fulfill my goals.”

Recipient PhotoExtraction & Processing Division Scholarship
Daimon Heller, University of Missouri–Rolla

“It’s wonderful to have my academic diligence and extra curricular involvement recognized; it not only provides financial support, but more importantly provides recognition and additional motivation to continue my pursuit of excellence in the materials field.”

“I would like to thank the TMS EPD committee for selecting me to receive this award. I am very honored to have been chosen. I plan to put this money toward offsetting the costs of my education.”

Recipient PhotoLight Metals Division Scholarship
Vipul Badjatya, Indian Institute of Technology–Kanpur

“I feel extremely honored to receive the TMS/LMD Scholarship at an undergraduate level. Personally, I am very thankful to TMS for appreciating my work and talent. This award has brought into me a new enthusiasm and energy for my work. I would also like to thank my institute, Indian Institute of Technology–Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), and my supervisor Prof. R. Balasubraminiam whose persistent guidance has brought me to this level of understanding. Without them, it would have been impossible for me to get this award. I would really appreciate the idea of TMS to provide scholarships to the talents spread in different corners of the world. This really helps budding talents to come up and dive into the deepest of this field. This award has brought into me a feeling of doing something which, one day, becomes a great contribution to the field.”
