Free Membership and a Free Book--And It's All Legal!

There may be no such thing as a free lunch, but there can be a free book and free membership in TMS if you know what to do.

Here's how: Upon graduation, students without immediate plans to continue on to graduate school may obtain full TMS member benefits through November 30, 1995, at no cost. For two years after the expiration of the free membership, you pay only $19.50 per year if you elect to remain a member. You will be called a "junior member" during this period. Afterward, you will be eligible for full membership. [Sure, the designation is not quite as pretigious as "member," but you'll also be saving $50.50 over the full member fee. That's a deal--ed.]

The procedure is simple: Complete an application form and return it to TMS. Approval is automatic for existing student members. For a form, see page 40 in the January 1995 JOM or contact Nellie Luther at the address listed below.

About that book: Automatic junior membership entitles the former student to select one complimentary book from a list made available through the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers' (AIME)'s Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. (TMS is one of four member societies in AIME.) The fund, used to produce publications for young engineers, began at AIME in 1929 in memory of Colonel Mudd's contribution to the growth of various mining enterprises.
