How the Delft Student Chapter Won the TMS Student Member-Get-A-Member Campaign

(As Explained by Faculty Advisor Gus Van Weert)

The Delft chapter was started a few years ago by raw materials engineering students at the faculty of mining and petroleum engineering (550 students) of the Delft University of Technology. The faculty is rather unique in its combination of mining and petroleum engineering--the curriculum stresses earth sciences, not materials sciences. Therefore, students join the Extraction & Processing Division in TMS in addition to the Industrial Minerals Division and the Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME). In 1994, seven students registered with TMS and 36 joined with SME.

For the TMS student campaign, Delft engineering students simply invited materials science students (part of the faculty of chemical engineering) to join the chapter. Surprisingly, none of the materials science students were TMS members. Eventually 18 of the 23 new members recruited during the campaign were materials science students.

Raymond Philippe and Ellen Molleman were the students selected to experience life in the fast lane in Las Vegas; they met many fellow students and TMS staff and had a great time. Thanks TMS for recognizing student initiative!
