Professional Preface, vol. 3, no. 1, p. 1.
Over the cold winter months, many things have happened around the TMS student chapters that deserve noting. Here's what's been going on:
UBC Wins Student Member Get a Member Contest
Hats off to the University of British Columbia (UBC), which won the second annual TMS Student Member Get a Member Contest by recruiting 29 new members. For their efforts, the chapter will receive $500 for travel expenses to either the 1996 TMS Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, or the 1996 TMS Fall Meeting as Part of Materials Week in Cincinnati, Ohio.
UBC led 14 joint TMS/ASM and TMS/Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum chapters in the two-month contest. All students who recruited at least two members received a free TMS fannypack; a total of 23 were distributed and 89 new members were signed on.
Other chapters (and the number of members recruited) were: Pohang University (23); Korea Maritime (11); Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (6); Ohio State (4); University of South Australia (3); Michigan State (3); Pennsylvania State University (3); Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (2); University of Akron (1); University of Connecticut (1); Miassachusetts Institute of Technology (1); Temple (1); and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and University (1)
TMS Revises Student Members' Pages on WWW
Be sure to check out the revised student members' home page on the TMS World Wide Web site at http://www.tms.org/Students/Students.html. The home page offers links to the home pages of current student chapters as well as information on scholarships and awards, how to form a student chapter, and the role of student members in TMS. In addition, you can also access the site of this publication, Professional Preface, which is also released in its entirety on the web (you're reading it now!).
Watch Your Mail for 1996-1997 Student Contest and Scholarship Information
All TMS student contest and scholarship information will be distributed in February and March through the TMS student chapters. See your faculty advisor or chapter president for details, or access the TMS student page on the web as described above.
TMS Welcomes Four New Joint Student Chapters
Four new joint student chapters of the TMS and Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (MetSoc of CIM) were approved by the TMS Board of Directors at the TMS Fall Meeting as part of Materials Week in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, three more chapters were approved pending completion of the application materials.
As a result of the Board's action, student chapters have been established at the University of Alberta, the University of British Columbia (a second chapter!), McMaster University, and Queen's University.
Chapters at Ecole Polytechnique, McGill University, and University of Toronto should be joining the fun soon pending proper completion of the application process.
