Here's how: Upon graduation in May or August 1996, students without immediate plans to continue on to graduate school may obtain full TMS member benefits through December 31, 1996, at no cost! For two years after the expiration of the free membership, you pay only $19.50 per year if you elect to remain a member. You will be called an "automatic junior member" during this period. Afterward, you will be eligible for full membership. (Sure, the designation is not quite as prestigious as "member," but you'll also be saving $65.50. That's a deal.)
The procedure is simple: Complete an application form and return it to TMS. Approval is automatic for existing student members. For a form, contact TMS at the address listed at the end of this article.
About that book: Automatic junior membership entitles the former student to select one complimentary book from a list made available through the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers' (AIME)'s Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. (TMS is one of four member societies of AIME.) The fund, used to provide publications to young engineers, began at AIME in 1929 in memory of Colonel Mudd's contribution to various mining enterprises.
For more information on junior membership or for a form, contact Nellie Luther, TMS Member Services Department, at (724) 776-9000, ext. 213; fax (412) 776-3770; or e-mail natale@tms.org.
