A Joint Student Effort: ASM and TMS Working Together
Both ASM International and TMS have a common goal to help students find the
academic opportunities, networking possibilities, and career enlightenment that
will lead them to careers in metallurgy, materials science and engineering, or
related fields. Since 1962, ASM and TMS have had a joint student program that
allows students the opportunity to be members and receive the benefits of both
societies for one low membership fee. Since 1988, we have also offered campuses
the opportunity to charter joint student chapters. We are very excited to move
into the next year with a refreshed commitment to the joint partnership and
updated services for students and the faculty advisors who guide them.
A team representing the two societies has started to plan and update faculty
advisor and student member communication, student chapter materials, joint
awards and contests, student membership recruitment, chapter programming, and
Materials Week activities. As of September 1, 1996, ASM will administer the
student chapter activities and communication; TMS will manage the
administration of student membership. This change will benefit our student
chapters and members by forging stronger relationships with the network of ASM
professional chapters and utilizing the TMS academic membership base to
continue strong recruitment and retention programs. The two societies will work
closely together and meet quarterly to plan and implement program details that
give students the best opportunities to explore materials science and
engineering. Some highlights for 1996-97 include:
- A joint student booth at Materials Week.
- An annual student membership date so that joint students will all be billed
in the fall.
- New Membership Challenge Week activities and contests for students in the
fall.
- Regular joint mailings to faculty advisors three times a year.
- A new Joint Student Chapter Handbook.
- A simplified reporting structure for chapters.
- A focus group on student member issues at Materials Week.
We are very excited about this next phase of our joint relationship; by
working together, we hope to give our student members a very special membership
experience! If you have any questions about the joint ASM/TMS student program
or student member and chapter activities, please contact us!
