Minority students in engineering
Since 1981, the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering
(NACME) has developed and analyzed comparative data on the performance of
institutions in retaining minority students through graduation. Data released
in December 1995 shows that more than half of all minority graduates came from
36 engineering schools. Only five institutions produced more than 100 minority
graduates, and an additional 17 produced more than 50.
$1 million scholarship endowment at the University of Alabama
One of the largest gifts in the history of University of Alabama's
College of Engineering, a $1 million endowment has been granted by the Citation
Corporation of Birmingham, Alabama. The Citation Corporation Endowed
Scholarships in Engineering will promote the education of full-time students
and honor T. Morris Hackney, the chair, president, and chief executive officer
of Citation Corporation. Top priority for five of the scholarships will be
given to the dependents of Citation Corporation employees who desire to study
engineering. The second priority is engineering students pursuing degrees in
metallurgical and materials engineering.
