This story appears in The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's student newsletter
Professional Preface, vol. 3, no. 4, p. 2.
Student members may attend the technical sessions, exhibits, and lectures held Monday through Thursday at no cost. The registration for students who are not members is $19.50, which will be applied toward a joint ASM/TMS student membership for students who stop by the joint student booth and complete a membership application sometime during the week.
In addition to the many meetings, sessions, and events held throughout Materials Week, some special opportunities have been scheduled especially for students to mingle and have some fun.
New! Student Booth at Materials Week
Meet your friends, exchange recruitment ideas, learn about student membership
opportunities, and tell us about your chapter at the new joint student booth.
Paid Student Monitors
Once again, students will have the opportunity to earn money to defray their
expenses while they learn about materials! Students can earn $20 per session
(up to $40 per day) as session monitors throughout Materials Week. Monitors are
responsible for operating audio visual equipment and recording session
attendance statistics; all monitors must report to the Author's Coffee each
morning of their scheduled sessions. Positions are limited and will be assigned
on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested students should contact Peggy
Weiss at TMS at (724) 776-9000, ext. 227; fax (724) 776-3770; e-mail
weissp@tms.org.
1996 Forum on Careers in Materials Science and Engineering
6:00-7:30 P.M.
Attendees will have the opportunity to gain insight into various career
choices and participate in roundtable discussions with invited professional
representatives. The forum speaker will be Richard J. Konieczka from Sound
Communications in Seattle, Washington, discussing "The Technical Communication
Model" for achieving success in the workplace. The event includes an informal
dinner buffet during the roundtable discussions.
There is no charge to participate in the forum and roundtable discussions; however, preregistration is required. Watch for registration information through your local student chapter and in future announcements.
Student/Faculty Mixer
7:30-9:30 P.M.
Students, faculty, and board members and executive officers for both societies
are cordially invited to attend the traditional mixer. Winners of the following
awards and contests will be announced preceding the mixer festivities--ASM/TMS
Chapters of Excellence Contest, ASM Outstanding Scholars, TMS International
Symposium on Superalloys Scholarships. Snacks will be provided for the evening,
along with music for dancing!
Students or faculty advisors having issues they would like the Student Affairs Committee to discuss should contact Vicki Koebnick at TMS (724) 776-9000 ext. 226; e-mail koebnick@tms.org.
Focus-On-Students Luncheon, Tuesday, October 8, 1996
Cincinnati Convention Center
This invitation-only event from 12:00-2:00 P.M. is jointly sponsored by ASM
International and TMS to focus on the needs and wishes of the joint ASM/TMS
student member. Students will be assigned a focus topic to discuss over an
informal luncheon with ASM and TMS staff members. Topics to be discussed
include membership benefits: what do our student members need? chapter
programs: how can we work together to facilitate participation? and campus
environment: being a metallurgical/materials science and engineering student in
the 1990s. Invitees will be selected from registrants for the Forum on Careers,
with an emphasis on achieving a cross section of universities represented at
Materials Week.
