Why You Should Attend a Student Affairs Committee Meeting

The TMS Student Affairs Committee meets twice a year--once at the TMS Annual Meeting and again at Materials Week. Unfortunately, we've found that a key ingredient to committee success is frequently missing--YOU!

At Materials Week '96 last month in Cincinnati, Ohio, we held the first focus group luncheon with more than 20 students gathered to discuss membership benefits, chapter activities, and the concerns of today's materials science and engineering student. As the results of this focus group are being reviewed by committee members and staff, it will only be through continued communication with you that we make improvements to the student program.

Therefore, I would like to extend an invitation to all student members and faculty advisors to attend a Student Affairs Committee meeting. A portion of each committee meeting is dedicated solely to hearing from you. Meeting announcements and agendas as well as follow-up minutes are distributed to student chapter chairs and faculty advisors, but feel free when attending a conference to stop by the meeting or even stop one of our committee members in the hallway.

If, after your first meeting, you wish to become more involved, remember that the TMS Student Affairs Committee accepts student members as committee members. To sign-up, attend a meeting and express your interest. This will add you to the list to receive the latest information via all committee mailings.

For additional Student Affairs Committee information or if you have a question or comment about the TMS student program, contact Vicki Koebnick at TMS, 184 Thorn Hill Road, Warrendale, Pennsylvania 15086; (724) 776-9000, ext. 226, fax (724) 776-3770; e-mail koebnick@tms.org.

I hope to see you at our meeting in Orlando!

Tresa Pollock
Student Affairs Director
