Want to Escape the Winter Blues? Come Join Us in Orlando!
Come escape the depths of winter by joining more than
100 of your closest TMS friends in Orlando, Florida,
at the 1997 TMS Annual Meeting, February 9-13.
Students can enjoy the revamped Student/Faculty Mixer
on February 9, then make money to offset the costs of
attending the meeting by serving as student monitors
in the technical sessions.
Student/Faculty Mixer
Water, fun, food, beer,* games, and prizes--Can
you think of a better way to spend a Sunday evening in
February? This is not just another boring networking event. In true
TMS fashion, we've taken the Student/Faculty Mixer to
a whole new level--we're having a beach party! On Sunday evening, we will gather poolside at the Omni Hotel in Orlando to dance away the night to the Beach Boys and other surfing groups, play volleyball with an oversized beach ball, do the limbo, pose for silly pictures, win prizes, and enjoy some terrific refreshments.
All attendees--students, faculty, and staff--are required to dress appropriately. That means leave your suit at the hotel and break-out your sandals. Bermuda shorts, and Hawaiian shirts. If the weather cooperates, we can even enjoy the pool, so bring your towel!
Invitations will be sent though the chapters, so watch your mail or contact Nellie Luther at TMS, 184 Thorn Hill Road, Warrendale, Pennsylvania 15086; (724) 776-9000, ext. 213; fax (724) 776-3770; e-mail natale@tms.org.
Earning Money as a Student Monitor
To make your trip more profitable, why not sign up as
a student monitor? Student monitors are responsible for
recording session attendance statistics, assisting with
audio/visual equipment, and assisting the authors and session
organizers. Generally, monitors are paid $20 for each session covered.

By following a few helpful tips, student monitors can make
it through the week a little easier while helping to keep the
sessions running smoothly.
- Sign-up by January 1. Monitors' positions are
limited and are assigned on a first-come basis.
- If you want to be a student monitor for a luncheon
session, apply early. These popular sessions are
filled quickly.
- Don't wait. Send in your session selections on
time so organizers can be certain that all sessions
are covered.
- Don't sign up for a Thursday session if you won't
be available. Leaving the meeting early and not
covering your assigned session means valuable statistics and assistance for the authors will be unavailable
- All monitors must report to the Authors'
Coffee each morning of their scheduled sessions. Remember,
Authors' Coffee starts at 7 a.m., so go easy on the
night life, especially at the Student/Faculty
Mixer Sunday night!
- Free coffee and pastries are available for monitors at Authors' Coffee to make it easier for you to get out of bed.
- Bring all of your paperwork (e.g., attendance sheets) to Orlando and especially to the Authors' Coffee. Also, bring your own pens and pencils.
- Practice makes perfect. Slide projectors are available for you to practice with or learn how to use.
- Laser pointers are one of the greatest myths
of Meeting lore. Don't waste your time looking for what
doesn't exist!
- Don't be late for your session!
*In accordance with Florida state law, alcoholic beverages will be served only to members who are 21 years of age or older; proper identification will be required.
