During the competition, Washington State University concentrated on a different theme each day. On Monday, the chapter went on a trip to Spokane, Washington, for a lecture on the history of the aluminum industry in the area. The lecture was sponsored by the Inland Empire chapter of ASM. On Tuesday, students inflated balloons and modeled several different polymer chains. Wednesday featured a poetry competition on ceramics; M. Grant Norton, chapter faculty advisor, and Alan Brown were the winners. Students also sported colored trash bags to form a projection of the 100 planes on the MgO crystal structure. On Thursday, a composites interpretive dance contest was held. Students did the limbo under a composite beam to illustrate how aligned whisker-reinforced composites are made during tape casting. On Friday, students wore computer chips as necklaces to symbolize conductor day, and the week topped off with semiconductor jokes.
There was a tremendous amount of effort put into Membership Challenge Week by many student chapters. The University of British Columbia was runner-up in the Most Creative Contest. Student chapters receiving honorable mention include Youngstown State University, Iowa State University, Drexel University, Don Bosco Technical Institute, University of California at Santa Barbara, San Jose University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
