Employers Hiring More Graduates in 1998
The Class of 1998 will receive two great graduation gifts: many job opportunities and respectable starting salary offers, according to Job Outlook '98, a survey of employers' hiring intentions as they relate to new college graduates. The survey is conducted annually by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). According to the survey, nearly 70 percent of employers plan to hire more new graduates by the end of the 1997-1998 academic year than they did last year. Other findings from the survey include:
- The use of the Internet as a hiring tool is on the rise.
- Although facing stiff competition for new hires, employers are not willing to settle for just any job candidate.
- In spite of high demand/low supply job market, employers' standards are remaining high when it comes to what makes favorable impressions on them.
- Employers feel that colleges and universities need to concentrate on teaching students hands-on skills, and they hope that schools will move away from the classroom-as-a-think-tank approach.
