The U.S. National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and Department of Agriculture are sponsoring a program for science and engineering graduate students to study in Japan or Korea in the summer of 1999. The program will award travel costs to and from Japan or Korea, living costs while in the country, and an allowance of $2,000. U.S. graduate students will gain first-hand experience in a Japanese or Korean research environment, intensive Japanese/Korean language training, and an introduction to the science and science-policy infrastructure of Japan and Korea. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents; enrolled at a U.S. institution in a relevant Ph.D., M.D., or M.S. program with one year of study completed; and pursuing studies in fields of science or engineering supported by the three government agencies.
Program dates for Japan are late-June to late-August 1999; dates for Korea are mid-June to early-August 1999. The deadline is December 1, 1998. Send applications to the Japan and Korea Program, Room 935, Division of International Programs, National Science Foundation, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22230; (703) 306-1701.
