Get Involved in Membership Challenge '98

Membership Challenge '98, a recruitment contest between joint ASM/TMS student chapters, will be held the entire month of October. Intended to challenge student members to re-cruit new joint ASM/TMS student members, the contest will recognize all chapters that increase their membership by a minimum of 15 percent. Contest winners receive prizes for the most creative recruiting strategies and the highest percentage increase in chapter membership.

How To Participate

There are two categories in which your chapter can participate: most creative recruitment strategies ($250 and trophy) and highest percentage increase in chapter membership ($500). The 1997 winners were: Most Recruited Members, University of British Columbia; Most Creative Strategies, Georgia Institute of Technology.

To enter the most creative strategies category, chapters must submit a record of the month's recruitment activities and programs. A one-page description of the used recruitment strategies as well as photographs that show the chapter spirit, recruitment activities, or new members should be included.

The chapter that implements the most creative program to recruit new members while achieving a minimum 15% increase in membership will win the creative recruitment strategies contest. The winning chapter will display a special Membership Challenge trophy until the following year's contest winner has been determined. An article recognizing the chapter will be published in ASM News in Advanced Materials and Processes and Professional Preface in JOM.

The chapter with the highest percentage increase during Membership Challenge '98 will also be recognized in the two journals. Additionally, the chapter will receive a check for $500.

Rules and Procedures

Entries can be submitted weekly or at one time. All entries must be accompanied by the Membership Challenge cover sheet and postmarked no later than November 1, 1998.

Only new member recruits will count toward chapter growth; renewal of existing memberships for 1998-1999 may be submitted, but will not be counted in this contest. Your chapter must have a minimum of ten active members; if you have fewer than ten members, any increase beyond ten will be considered.

Starting chapter membership size will be determined based on existing joint ASM/TMS student membership as of September 30. Only applications submitted with the cover sheet will be included when calculating chapter growth. Chapters may enter both categories; however, the same chapter can not win both categories. Photographs submitted may be published and will not be returned. Contest winners receive prizes for the most creative recruiting strategies and the highest percentage increase in chapter membership.
