The Seeley W. Mudd Memorial FundColonel Seeley W. Mudd won lasting recognition in the mining profession for the vast mineral riches he discovered and developed for the benefit of mankind. To this day, he is still widely known for his indispensable contributions to the growth of such famous mining enterprises as the Ray Consolidated Copper Co., Texas Gulf Sulphur Co., and Cyprus Mining Corp. When he died on May 24, 1926, his friends and colleagues reserved their highest tribute for the unstinting help he had given to young members of their profession. Daniel C. Jackling said, "I know of no other of his profession who did more in the way of encouragement or precept to make beginners in the practical pursuit of that profession worthy of it." In administering the fund in memory of Colonel Mudd, AIME has sought to perpetuate his lifelong interest in newcomers to the mining fraternity. Colonel Mudd was a devoted member of AIME for 43 years and served as its Vice President and Director. The Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund was entrusted to AIME on September 9, 1929, by Colonel Mudd's widow, Della M. Mudd, and his two sons, Harvey S. and Seeley G. Mudd.
