Scope

This short course will emphasize the fundamental aspects of the extractive metallurgy of zinc and will complement the presentations given at the 9th International Symposium on Lead and Zinc Processing (PbZn 2020), held in conjunction with TMS2020. The course will review the fundamental basis for the technologies now used by the industry and will offer a foundation for the development of new processes.

The Basics: Zinc Smelting via Roast-Leach-Electrowin (RLE)

  • Roasting
  • Leaching
  • Purification
  • Electrolysis
  • Fe-residues in zinc smelting

Directions of Development: Alternative Smelting Processes

  • Secondary raw materials for zinc smelting
  • Pyrometallurgical zinc smelting (ISF and Ausmelt)
  • Integrated processes--producing SHG from up to 100% secondary raw materials
  • Developments in raw materials and determination of treatment charges and revenues

  • Uses and future uses of zinc
  • Customers' demand linked to sustainable development, circularity, and responsible sourcing
