Srini Chada Takes Office as 2024 TMS President

“TMS is about people,” said 2023 TMS President Brad Boyce of Sandia National Laboratories at the start of the TMS-AIME Awards Ceremony on Wednesday night. He brought his year as president to a close by thanking the volunteers who make this organization work. “Your energy and insight is what makes TMS strong. I look forward to seeing where you will take this society next. And I thank you for entrusting me to serve as the TMS president."

Boyce now passes leadership of the Society to Srini Chada of General Dynamics Mission Systems. “As the next president of TMS, I will work to grow our membership by encouraging student members, first-time attendees, and occasional participants to join and swell our ranks,” said Chada. “I want them all to experience first-hand what I have gained in the past three-and-a-half decades as a TMS member.”

Meet the 2024 TMS Board of Directors

Two new members take office today on the 2024 TMS Board of Directors: Dan Miracle, Air Force Research Laboratory, begins his three-year term in the TMS presidential cycle, and Robert Maass, Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, will step into the role of Program Director. Diversity and Inclusion Breakfast

On Wednesday morning, the TMS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee hosted the Fresh Coffee, Fresh Ideas: Diversity and Inclusion Breakfast. Participants discussed topics related to diversity and inclusion such as moving beyond imposter syndrome and towards effective resolution of harassment, overcoming anxiety in the workplace, encouraging empathy over division, and building an inclusive culture. DEI will be the focus of the Fifth Summit on Diversity in the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Professions (DMMM5), to be co-located with the TMS 2025 Annual Meeting & Exhibition (TMS2025) in Las Vegas, Nevada, March 23-27. Light Metals Division Luncheon

At Wednesday's Light Metals Division Luncheon, speaker Glenn Pushis (pictured, left), president of Aluminum Dynamics, talked about how his company is moving forward with production of a new aluminum rolling mill in Columbia, Mississippi. His talk was a highlight of the event, which also featured award presentations to students, young leaders, and professionals.

Magnesium Technology 2024

This week's Magnesium Technology 2024 symposium featured six technical sessions and a poster session. Five keynote speakers were invited to deliver opening talks at sessions throughout the week. Keynote speakers included: Petra Maier, University of Applied Sciences Stralsund; Ashley Bucsek, University of Michigan; Maria Teresa Perez Prado (pictured, top left), IMDEA Materials Institute; Jian-Feng Nie (pictured, top center), Monash University; and Alexander Grant (pictured, top right), Magrathea. The session also featured awards presentations to Magnesium Technology award recipients.

Tresa Pollock Delivers William D. Nix Award Lecture

On Wednesday morning, Tresa Pollock, University of California, Santa Barbara, gave the keynote presentation, “Designing Fatigue Resistant Structural Materials,” as the 2024 William D. Nix Award recipient during the Nix Award and Lecture Symposium. Pollock stated how excited she was to finally join the Nix academic family through this award and lecture. “It is an honor to be here,” she said. “Bill, thank you for all the science and all the wonderful people you’ve trained.” If you know someone who meets the criteria for this award, nominate them by the April 1 deadline for 2025. Electrode Technology Panel Discussions

On Wednesday morning, the Electrode Technology for Aluminum Production symposium held the Workshop—Step Changes Required for Carbon Anodes. This special session consisted of presentations by invited panelists, followed by a highly interactive discussion among audience members, moderators, and panelists. The session was sponsored by the TMS Aluminum Committee.

The Future of Work in Materials Science Symposium and Panel Discussion

Yesterday featured The Future of Work in Materials Science Symposium, where a variety of professionals gave talks on how to navigate the materials science and engineering field in a post-COVID-19 world. Speakers included Chelsey Hargather, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology; Surojit Gupta, University of North Dakota; Yoshishige Okuno, Resonac Corporation; Dong “Lilly” Liu, University of Oxford; and Michael Demkowicz, Texas A&M University. Following these talks, the symposium ended with a panel discussion where panelists answered attendees’ questions on topics such as the biggest changes they’ve noticed in the industry, the difficulties they are seeing in students transitioning from academia to the workforce in the past few years, the changes they’ve noticed in the flexibility and availability of jobs, and more. Plenary Panel Discusses Critical Materials

Tuesday’s all-conference plenary session marked the seventh installment in the series but the first time that the plenary was held as a panel discussion. In the group photo (from left to right), 2023 TMS President Brad Boyce sat down for a discussion of Translating Scientific Discovery into Impactful Innovation to Solve Critical Materials Challenges with Thomas Lograsso, director of the Critical Materials Innovation Hub at Ames National Laboratory; Robert Miles, chief technology officer and co-founder of Momentum Technologies, Inc.; and Helena Khazdozian, co-chair of the Critical Materials Collaborative (CMC), Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office, Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy. Each panelist delivered a brief presentation before sitting down to answer questions from the audience in this interactive session.

Launch Your Career Workshop

"Most people don't mind being asked for help . . . the worst thing they can do is say no," said Xun "Wendy" Gu, Stanford University, yesterday afternoon at the TMS Launch Your Career Workshop, sponsored by the TMS Emerging Professionals Committee. Gu went through all aspects of the job application process from figuring out what positions to apply for and building your resume/CV to interviewing and negotiating an offer. She encouraged attendees to use their network, which is "really easy to say, but not so easy to do," she noted. However, "your peers are your best resources," she said. Following Gu's presentation, four panelists from academia, government, and industry answered attendees' questions. The speakers described what a typical day looks like in each of their sectors, discussed what the work-life balance is for each, and offered tips for how to transition from being a student to a working professional in each. The panelists included Alex Baker, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Vinamra Agrawal, Auburn University; Charity Steele, RHI Magnesita; and Jonathan Madison.

Frontiers of Materials Award Symposia

Monday and Tuesday featured the Frontiers of Materials Award symposia, organized by the two 2024 recipients of the TMS Frontiers of Materials awards. In addition to organizing their session, the recipients delivered keynote lectures. On Monday, Pinar Acar, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, delivered the "Inverse Design for Crystal Plasticity Model Identification via Physics-Informed Neural Networks" keynote during the Physics-Informed Machine Learning for Modeling and Design of Materials and Manufacturing Processes session. During the Novel Ceramics Processes for Nuclear Applications session on Tuesday, Takaaki Koyanagi, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, gave the keynote talk, "Development of Next Generation SiC Composites for Nuclear Energy." Join us in recognizing these individuals and see them presented with their awards at the TMS-AIME Awards Ceremony this evening. Extraction & Processing Division/Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division Luncheon

“As metallurgists, we are thrown into a setting where we are producing about two billion tons of metals every year . . . we are really the backbone of business,” said Dierk Raabe, Max-Planck lnstitut für Eisenforschung GmbH, at Tuesday’s Extraction & Processing Division/Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division (EPD/MPMD) Luncheon. He addressed some of the sustainability challenges of being one of the biggest businesses in the world in his talk “The Two Billion Tonnes Question: How Can Research Help to Make Metals Sustainable?”

Both EPD and MPMD award recipients were recognized during the luncheon, with Christina Meskers presenting awards to EPD recipients and Carelyn Campbell presenting the MPMD awards.

Emerging Professionals Tutorial Lecture

Yesterday, Atieh Moridi, Cornell University, delivered the Emerging Professionals Tutorial Lecture as one of the 2024 recipients of the Early Career Faculty Fellow Award. Her talk, entitled "The Power of Instability: Non-Equilibrium Dynamics in Additive Manufacturing and Professional Development," drew parallels between obstacles in research problems and life. She encouraged the students and young professionals in attendance to "view obstacles as an opportunity to grow" and to not let themselves be held back by such difficulties. "Resilience and self-belief can help pave the way to a successful career," she counseled. She encouraged attendees to think outside of the box, because "bending the rules can lead to more innovation."

How can we use materials science to benefit society? Could we attract more students to MSE? These are a few of the questions that award recipients posed at Tuesday afternoon’s TMS2024 Acta Materialia Symposium, which honored four TMS members with prestigious Acta Materialia Awards. Light Metals Keynote Session

On Monday morning, light metals programming at TMS2024 kicked off with a special session of six invited keynote speakers addressing the topic of Decarbonization of Alumina and Primary Aluminum Production to be the Metal of Choice. Additive Manufacturing Keynote Session

A total of 13 symposia on additive manufacturing-related topics are being held this week at TMS2024. Monday afternoon’s Additive Manufacturing Keynote session offered an opportunity for participants in all of these symposia to come together and hear talks from four invited speakers. Pictured, from left to right, are Minh-Son Pham, Imperial College London, who was the recipient of the TMS Young Innovator in the Materials Science of Additive Manufacturing Award. Chase Cox, MELD Manufacturing Corporation, opened the session, followed by Dierk Raabe, Max-Planck Institute, and Cindy Waters, Naval Surface Warfare Research Center Carderock Division. The event was sponsored by Springer Nature.

Advances in Pyrometallurgy: Furnace Containment

The Advances in Pyrometallurgy: Furnace Containment symposium opened on Monday with a session on Furnace Design and Operations and ended the afternoon with a panel discussion on furnace design lessons learned featuring (pictured, from left to right): Harman Oterdoom, Butterbridge; Avi Nanda, Freeport-McMoran; Allan MacRae, MacRae Technologies; Lloyd Nelson, LR Nelson Consulting; and Stuart Nicol, Glencore Technology. The symposium continues this morning with a session on Refractories. 

 

Structural Materials Division Symposium Honors Wole Soboyejo

Materials Science for Global Development—Health, Energy, and Environment: An SMD Symposium in Honor of Wole Soboyejo began Monday morning with a retrospective view of Soboyejo’s accomplishments and contributions, delivered by Diran Apelian, University of California-Irvine (pictured, right). This was followed by a talk from Soboyejo (pictured, left), Worcester Polytechnic Institute, which provided a personal perspective on the key role of materials in global development, focusing on materials for health, energy, and the environment. The symposium continues today with sessions focused on the topics of Materials for Global Development in Energy and Water (morning session) and Metal (afternoon session).

Structural Materials Division/Functional Materials Division Luncheon and Lecture

"Our next generation is in the room today," said Suveen Mathaudhu, TMS Structural Materials Division (SMD) Chair, as he introduced the speakers at the SMD/FMD luncheon yesterday. “They are the future of our profession,” he continued. The session began with some introductory remarks from Mathaudhu and Functional Materials Division (FMD) chair, Saryu Fensin, followed by the presentation of SMD and FMD division awards. Attendees then heard from the four recipients of the 2023 SMD and FMD Young Leaders Professional Development Awards. Each presenter gave an overview of their research interests and areas of expertise and discussed the importance of receiving these awards. The presenters were (pictured, from left to right): Jing Du (2023 FMD recipient), Pennsylvania State University; Arun Kumar Mannodi (2023 FMD recipient), Purdue University; Dong “Lilly” Liu (2023 SMD recipient), University of Bristol; and Christopher Zenk (2023 SMD recipient), Friedrich-Alexander-Universität.

TMS Committee Membership Volunteer Fair

The TMS Professional Development Committee hosted a special session, TMS Committee Membership Volunteer Fair: Your Nucleation Site for Career Growth, on Monday afternoon for anyone interested in becoming more involved in TMS committees. After a brief introduction about the benefits of involvement with TMS, led by 2023 TMS President Brad Boyce and TMS Professional Development Committee Chair Emily Kinser, participants met with members of TMS Functional Committees to discuss how and why to get more involved in these non-technical committees, including the three Functional Committees that are open to all TMS members: the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee; the Emerging Professionals Committee; and the Bladesmithing Committee. Asian & Pacific Islander Networking Mixer

On Monday evening, the Asian & Pacific Islander Working Group and the Emerging Professionals Committee of TMS held a Networking Mixer for any TMS2024 attendee interested in networking, exploring early-career options, and learning more about the Asian and Pacific Islander experience. Funding support was provided by the University of Oxford, Engineering Science Department.

TMS Committee Membership Volunteer Fair Today

This afternoon, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the TMS Committee Membership Volunteer Fair: Your Nucleation Site for Career Growth will be held in the Florida A room at the Hyatt. This session is for anyone who has ever thought about becoming part of a TMS committee but isn’t sure how to get started. The event features a unique open format that enables you to meet face-to-face with current members and representatives of numerous TMS committees. Participation in TMS committees is open to all TMS members, so come learn how TMS committee involvement can help grow your career.

Ohio State University Wins Materials Bowl

The Ohio State University's Buckeye Centered Cubic team won the 17th installment of the TMS Materials Bowl on Sunday night. TMS2024 Proceedings Editors Recognized at Committee Meetings

2023 TMS President Brad Boyce presented copies of two TMS2024 proceedings volumes to the books' editors during yesterday's Aluminum and Magnesium committee meetings. In the top picture, Boyce presents a copy of Magnesium Technology 2024 to the volume’s lead editor Aeriel Leonard. In the bottom picture, Boyce presents a copy of Light Metals 2024 to editor Sam Wagstaff. Attendees can purchase print copies of both of these volumes, as well as other TMS2024 proceedings, at the Springer Nature Publications booth in the Regency Foyer.

Sunday Professional Development Events

On Sunday, TMS2024 hosted two professional development events to help participants expand their skills and knowledge: the full-day Hydrogen as Energy Carrier and Reductant in Metallurgical Applications course and the half-day Metal Additive Manufacturing Processes Workshop.

A Look at the Sunday Night Welcome Reception
TMS2024 attendees came together at Sunday evening's Welcome Reception, which offered an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Each of the five TMS technical divisions hosted a networking zone, where individuals with similar interests could gather to talk, while enjoying appetizers and beverages.


Fellows and Invited Guests Reception
On Sunday evening, TMS Fellows and invited guests gathered to socialize at a special reception held at the Hyatt. The TMS Fellow award is the highest honor bestowed by the Society; the newest class of TMS Fellows will be inducted at the TMS-AIME Awards Ceremony on Wednesday evening.

TMS Introduces New Mentoring Program
This week, TMS is introducing a new mentoring program open to all TMS members. The TMS Mentoring Program pairs mentees seeking guidance and support with more experienced members of the Society who are willing to commit time and energy to the professional development of another member. Mentorships are meant to encourage participation in the mission of TMS by developing personalized professional goals to guide and expand the mentees’ understanding of volunteer possibilities within the Society.

We are now seeking applicants to serve as mentors and mentees. You can fill out an application form through the TMS Mentoring Program website. Applications are due by September 30, 2024, but early applications are encouraged.

Pick Up Your Attendee Badge at Registration Today

The first thing you’ll need to do at TMS2024 is to pick up your attendee badge in the registration area, located in the Regency Foyer of the Hyatt Regency Orlando. Make sure you visit the registration desk before it closes at 7:00 p.m. so you can get your badge and drink tickets before this evening's Welcome Reception begins. Registration opens today at 7:00 a.m. Self-serve kiosks will be set up throughout the registration area to allow attendees to print their own badges and tickets. You can use one of these kiosks or check in at the Registration Desk with a TMS representative.

Hold on to Your Badge! Please do not lose the registration badge and the attached tickets provided to you with your registration materials. You will need these to access all technical sessions, the exhibit hall, social functions, and other events. Please be advised that there is a $25 fee to reprint lost badges and tickets at the registration desk.

Panel and Meet-and-Greet with Federal Program Managers Planned on Monday

On Monday, March 4, the TMS Public & Governmental Affairs Committee will host the special session, Navigating the Federal Agency Grant Landscape for Successful Proposal Writing: Panel and Meet-and-Greet with Federal Program Managers, open to all TMS2024 attendees. The session will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Plaza Int’l D. Join us for this interactive one-hour panel discussion followed by a meet-and-greet with federal program managers/directors from the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and others. In this panel, program managers will introduce their programs, the larger federal funding landscape in their branch/division, and answer questions relevant to your proposal writing.

TMS2024 attendees in most registration classes* receive free online access to the complete collection of TMS2024 proceedings publications. These proceedings files are now available for you to download. To access the proceedings publications:

• Go to the Proceedings Publications login page.
• Enter your TMS2024 Registration ID# (usually formatted as 24-xxxx or 24-xxxxx including the hyphen). This number can be found in your TMS2024 registration confirmation email or retrieved through the Proceedings Publications login page.
• Enter the full name you provided when you registered for TMS2024.

Select from the 9 available titles by clicking the button below the book cover. At that point, you will be passed through to another page with free access. Note that there is no option to access all titles in a single download.

Please note that complimentary proceedings content must be downloaded by April 30, 2024, at which time standard pricing will take effect.

* The following registration classes do not receive proceedings access: those who registered to attend only the exhibit; additional exhibit booth personnel; guests; media; and non-meeting attendees.

Purchase Print Proceedings

Hard copies of TMS2024 conference proceedings, along with other select publications, can be purchased at the Spinger Nature Publications Booth, located in the Regency Foyer of the Hyatt Regency Orlando. The booth is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. today. TMS members receive a 40% discount off hard copies of all TMS2024 proceedings volumes.
