The mission of the Young Leaders Committee is to create opportunities and provide avenues for young professionals to increase their involvement in The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society.

As part of attending the 2004 Annual Meeting, the interns wrote the following summaries to describe their experiences.

ARVIND AGARWAL, Ph.D., Florida International University

I am honored to be nominated as one of the Young Leader Interns by TMS during 2004. Over the last eight years, I have been associated with TMS in different capacities with a beginning as a student member. This opportunity has provided me the opportunity to observe and participate in the organizational aspect of TMS activities. I would strongly encourage the students and young professionals to join TMS and participate in its activities to meet the future technical challenges and their professional goals. I am looking forward to meeting other TMS Young Leaders during the Fall 2004 meeting in New Orleans.

ELLEN CERRETA, Ph.D., Los Alamos National Laboratory

I would like to thank the SMD committee for choosing me to be one of its 2004 Young Leader Interns. In the past I have directly benefited from the presentation, educational, and networking opportunities provided by a TMS meeting. This year, in addition to attending symposia such as Magnesium Technology 2004 and the Symposium on Microstructural Stability in Honor of Roger Doherty, The Young Leaders Internship afforded me the opportunity to attend a wide range of functions and meetings, such as the SMD committee meeting and the Board of Directors meeting, that gave me a better understanding of how TMS is able to continue to provide these opportunities for its members. The details of symposia organization, publishing, membership, and committee organization were instructive for me as far as understanding how TMS continues to support fundamental materials science as well as remain current with developing technologies that fall under its umbrella. I am looking forward to becoming more involved in TMS in the future and I feel truly honored to have been selected as a Young Leader Intern for 2004.

ANDREA HODGE, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

I was very honored to be selected as a SMD Young Leader Intern for 2004. The Charlotte conference offered me the opportunity to be exposed to old, new and future research as well as to the day to day functions of TMS. One of the most fascinating items that I learned by attending the Board of Directors meeting was the fact that TMS has many members over 90 years old. Such loyalty from the members demonstrates that the Society's commitment to offer diversity, interesting forums and professional development to all of the membership indeed does work. I very much enjoyed my experience and I am looking forward to attend MS&T 2004.

HUGO JOUBERT, Pyromet Technologies

Thank you TMS! This was both an excellent opportunity and a great experience! The Young Leader Internship enabled me to observe the inner workings of TMS, meet people in my field, and to get involved with the pyrometallurgy committee. Mineral processing and specifically pyrometallurgy is big in South Africa. I believe there is a distinct opportunity, especially for the EPD division, to increase their footprint in and add value to the South African minerals industry. I intend this to be a first step for me to promote TMS in our beautiful country, and vice versa.

JIANTAO LIU, Nat'l Institute of Standards & Technology

I feel very honored to be chosen as a 2004 TMS Young Leader Intern. As a prestigious society in materials science and engineering, TMS provided me an opportunity to involve in a lot of activities in society level. Attending committee meetings gained me the keen sense of key issues of scientific research and engineering application at present time. TMS Young Leader Intern Program gave me a chance to interact with fellow young leaders and experienced TMS members, which I found is very beneficial. I am very grateful to TMS for giving me this great opportunity. I am looking forward to serving TMS for my whole career life.

STEPHANE MORENCY, Aluminum Pechiney Group

I was very honored to be selected as an LMD Young Leader Intern for 2004. It was very interesting and helpful to see how a professional organization is run by being part of the TMS Annual Meeting from the inside. At this meeting I had the chance to attend a lot of activities: LMD Council meeting, LMD Luncheon, TMS Award Banquet. I also attend a lot of session including the CastShop sessions and the Recycling sessions TMS also gave me the opportunity to enlarge my professional network on an international scale. This meeting in Charlotte was a great experience for me and I really look forward for the Fall Meeting in New Orleans and to be involved in the society.

ROGER J. NARAYAN, MD, Ph.D., Georgia Institute of Technology

I would like to express my gratitude to the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division of TMS for selecting me as one of their 2004 Young Leader Interns. I enjoyed participating in several meetings during the TMS 2004 Annual Meeting. I have greatly enjoying the opportunity to organize symposia, participate in the new Biomaterials Committee, and interact with colleagues at society events. I want to thank TMS for creating this environment for young materials engineers, and I look forward to continuing my participation and service to TMS.

VALESKA SCHROEDER, Hewlett Packard Co.

I really enjoyed attending the TMS annual meeting in Charlotte. After participating in the Electronic, Magnetic and Photonic Materials Division meeting and committee meetings, I have a better understanding of the way in which technical sessions are selected and planned, the sources for conference and publication funding, and the governing structure of TMS. A lot of work goes into making TMS successful that is not apparent when you just attend the technical sessions. I'm excited to continue participating in TMS and to help contribute to future TMS meetings. I'd like to thank TMS for the opportunity to attend the annual meeting as a young leader intern.

MARTA VORNBROCK, Nat'l Materials Advisory Board

I am very grateful for having been chosen as a 2004 TMS Young Leader Intern for MPMD. The Young Leaders Program enabled me to attend the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting, meet other professionals, and sit in on various committee meetings and the Board of Directors meeting. This has allowed me to learn a great deal about the mission and structure of TMS. As a recent graduate, I am especially appreciative of the support that this program will continue to provide as I transition from student to professional. I am looking forward to attending MS&T '04 and would highly recommend the Young Leaders Program and the TMS Annual Meeting to any young professional who wants to become active in the materials field.
