TMS Young Leaders: International Scholar Program

The Japan Institute of Metals (JIM) and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) established the joint JIM/TMS Young Leader International Scholar Program to promote young member activities and strengthen the collaboration between JIM and TMS. This collaboration has resulted in an exchange program, which offers select young members the opportunity to present papers at the international sessions of each organization's meeting.

SCHOLAR PROGRAM DETAILS

TMS and JIM identify one to three young authors to travel to the other organization's meeting to present a paper. The chosen International Scholars also spend a few days visiting select industrial facilities, research labs, or universities. On their return, they are required to write an article about their experiences for each organization's publication. The Young Leader International Scholars of each organization are charged with hosting and orienting the scholars of the other organization during their stay in the host county. The host organization supports the scholars, in part, during their stay overseas with complimentary meeting registration and non-financial assistance as necessary.

JIM holds a three-day annual meeting both in the spring and in the fall with a total of 2,500 papers presented annually. The technical division committee offers five to 10 symposia during the annual meetings on various topics and seven to nine symposia at other meetings. Subjects are advanced topics which provide an opportunity for members to participate and pursue their individual technical interests.

TMS holds its annual meeting in February or March, which includes approximately 2,900 presentations. The Materials, Science & Technology Conference is held in September or October, and TMS presents approximately 2,000 papers. The topics for both meetings cover a broad spectrum of materials science and engineering.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

Any JIM or TMS member 35-years-old or younger may apply to participate in this program. JIM winners are chosen by the International Academic Exchange Committee with agreement of the JIM Board of Directors. TMS winners are chosen by the chair, vice chair and secretary of the Young Leaders Committee unless the committee officers are candidates for the program. In that case, other Young Leader Committee members are appointed to the three-judge panel. Qualities/requirements considered by the selection committee:

1. Candidate should be a member actively participating in Young Leader activities.
2. Candidate should have experience in presenting technical papers at functions associated with his or her member organization.
3. Candidate must submit paper topic and abstract for review.
4. Candidate must submit a letter of recommendation.
5. Candidate must submit a paragraph describing the reasons he or she wishes to represent the member organization. Leadership qualities and other relative attributes should be included.
6. Candidate should be a responsible individual, honor commitments and be able to spend seven days in Japan or the United states as a representative of the member organization.
7. Candidate must possess presentation skills in English.
8. Candidate should possess leadership skills.
