Mission of the Young Leaders Program

The Young Leaders Program was created in 1993 to encourage young professionals to increase their involvement in The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS).

A Young Leader is a professional active in the materials field, under the age of 35, who is interested in taking a leadership role in the Society. Traditionally, this is a group of people who attend TMS meetings to present papers and attend sessions but are not involved in the inner workings of TMS (i.e., the committees).

Funding from the AIME Endowment Fund helped to support the start-up of the Young Leaders Program. Additional support has been received from the TMS Foundation.

YOUNG LEADER ISSUES

Important issues that the Young Leaders Committee has identified and is working to address are:

  • Networking between younger and senior members of TMS through a mentoring program.
  • Programming that is useful to young professionals.
  • Programming that addresses materials-based concerns for private industry.
  • An appreciation for and awareness of TMS activities.
