Materials Technology@TMS Now Offers Broader Coverage and Open Access for All Users

This week TMS unveils a new version of its Materials Technology@TMS on-line community: a version that is easier to navigate, encompasses a broader range of materials technologies, and is open to all web users. The on-line networking and resource-sharing site was originally launched in February 2007 and consisted of six narrowly focused materials communities. In its new form, the site consists of four broad communities that provide discussion boards and resource-sharing areas for individuals working in all aspects of materials science and engineering. The new communities are:

  • Emerging Materials Technologies: Encompasses all things nano and bio and includes the resources of the former Integrated Computational Materials Engineering community
  • Established Materials Technologies: Covers metal production, mineral processing, and the use of traditional materials in non-traditional applications and includes the contents of the former Magnesium and Superalloys communities
  • Materials Education: Updates the former Education community—a meeting place for educators to share teaching resources
  • Materials and Society: Covers material solutions for energy security, resource sustainability, environmental issues, aging infrastructure, and other societal challenges and includes the contents of the former Lead-Free Solders and Materials for Nuclear Power communities
Explore the new sites today through the link below.

Popular Short Course Planned for October

Registration is now open for the popular Industrial Aluminum Electrolysis short course sponsored by TMS. In 2008, this regularly sold-out event will move to the new venue of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, October 19–22. The four-day course, which will include an on-site visit to Dubai Aluminium smelters, is designed for technical and project managers, supervisors, and operators of Hall-Heroult cells; contributors to the development of primary aluminum production technology; and others interested in aluminum production.

Six international aluminum professionals from Hydro Aluminium, Alcoa, Dubai Aluminium Company, Welbank Consulting, and other consulting firms will act as instructors for the course. Although the course web site includes a series of topics that will be covered at the event, organizers encourage attendees to provide information on the areas that interest them most, so that the content of the course can be tailored to meet the audience's needs.

Special lodging rates are available at the Courtyard by Marriott in Dubai. To take advantage of the reduced rates, secure housing reservations by September 12. The deadline for course registration is September 26.

Results to be Discussed at MS&T'08

Recently the National Materials Advisory Board (NMAB) of the U.S. National Academies identified two reports of interest to the materials science and engineering community: Managing Materials for a Twenty-First Century Military and Integrated Computational Materials Engineering: A Transformational Discipline for Improved Competitiveness and National Security. Several TMS members serve on the NMAB, among them incoming TMS vice president Rusty Gray, and they have highlighted these two reports as being of particular interest to the TMS community.

Integrated Computational Materials Engineering, or ICME, is an area that TMS has taken a lead role in developing over the past few years. A wealth of resources on ICME is available through the Emerging Materials Technologies community of Materials Technology@TMS, and TMS has held extensive technical programming on the topic, with more planned for the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting. Among the outcomes of the ICME report are specific recommendations as to how materials societies like TMS can continue to advance this field.

The results of both reports will be discussed at a special session at Materials Science & Technology 2008 (MS&T'08), which will take place October 5–9 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Registration for MS&T'08 is open through September 26 and the preliminary conference program is now on-line.

How Could Universities Improve Gender Equity in MSE Departments?

At a recent conference on gender equity in university materials science and engineering (MSE) departments, attendees agreed that women are under-represented among MSE faculty. What do you think universities should do to improve the situation?

  • Actively seek diverse pools of candidates for faculty positions
  • Require training on gender bias for all involved in tenure and promotion decisions
  • Institute mentoring for young female faculty
  • Adopt family-friendly policies and ensure that faculty are not penalized for using them
  • Do nothing and let things sort themselves out naturally

Roadmap for Next-Generation Nuclear Plant

On August 15, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) delivered to Congress the Next Generation Nuclear Power Plant (NGNP) Licensing Strategy Report as required by the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The report describes the licensing approach, the analytical tools, the research and development activities, and the estimated resources required to license an advanced reactor design by 2017 and begin operation by 2021.

The NGNP represents a new concept for nuclear energy utilization, in which a gas-cooled reactor provides process heat for any number of industrial applications including electricity production, hydrogen production, coal-to-liquids, shale oil recovery, fertilizer production, and others that meet significant industrial needs. The report identifies NRC review procedures that require revisions as well as areas of new or additional research that must be conducted in order for the commission to reach decisions on any NGNP application.

The NGNP is a part of DOE's Generation IV nuclear program, which focuses on very high-temperature reactor technologies to produce hydrogen and other energy products, and furthers research and development to ensure the viability of the next generation of nuclear energy systems.
