CSIRO developed a new cover gas to replace sulfur hexafluoride, one of the most potent greenhouse gases. The new gas is called AM-cover and it is a dilute mixture of the environmenatlly benign refrigerant HFC-134a and a carrier gas like nitrogen. As compared to sulfur hexafluoride, AM-cover is not only more environmentally friendly, it is more effective, it costs less and it results in lower losses of magnesium. The technology was developed by CSIRO researchers working within CAST CRC, the Cooprerative Research Centre for Cast Metals Manufacturing. CAST has granted a licence to Advanced Magnesium Technology to market AM-cover worldwide.
