The Mission of the TMS Foundation

The TMS Foundation seeks to strengthen and develop young professionals to meet the essential needs of the minerals, metals, and materials community. Through its scholarships, awards, and professional development programs, the TMS Foundation plays a critical role in preparing talented individuals their futures as industry leaders who can address the challenges of a changing profession, contribute to technical advancement, and drive innovation. By investing in promising students and supporting emerging leaders early in their careers, the Foundation is guaranteeing the future of the profession.

As defined in the TMS Foundation Bylaws, the mission of the TMS Foundation is to support the development of professionals in the minerals, metals, and materials community within the context of our global society by:
  • Providing scholarships to the field’s most promising students, investing in the future of the profession and the industries it serves.
  • Funding programs that assist young professionals in attaining the highest level of technical, professional, and leadership development.
  • Supporting projects, programs, and tools that have a significant impact on minerals, metals, and materials education by virtue of content, methodology, or scope.
  • Investing in knowledge, people, products, and infrastructure that positively impact the quality of life in society through minerals, metals, and materials innovation.
  • Support the stewardship of earth and environment by promoting minerals, metals, and materials solutions.
Special Project Funding
The TMS Foundation funds occasional special projects that support its mission. To submit a special project to the TMS Foundation for consideration, please write a concept paper (approximately two pages) describing your request. The description should be concise and clearly state:
  • Your contact information
  • A working project title
  • How the project supports the mission of the TMS Foundation
  • Proposing entity and any collaborating entities
  • Project background and objectives
  • The amount of funding requested and budgeted
  • Period of performance
Send the paper electronically to the TMS Foundation Manager at TMSFoundation@tms.org. Every submission will receive a response. Approved submissions will be given further instructions on next steps for proposal submission.
