Preview TMS2018 Featured Sessions

An all-conference plenary with the leadership of Tesla and SpaceX, keynotes on additive manufacturing and materials innovations, and four honorary symposia are just a few of the highlights planned for the TMS 2018 Annual Meeting & Exhibition (TMS2018) in Phoenix, Arizona.

On Monday, March 12, TMS will hold an all-conference plenary session at lunchtime, marking a departure from the society’s usual schedule for the first day of technical programming. All meeting attendees are invited to gather from noon to 1:00 p.m. for “Defining the Future of Materials and Manufacturing Innovation.” During this special session, Charlie Kuehmann, who currently leads the materials engineering organizations at both Tesla and SpaceX, will deliver a presentation that explores potential futures for the automotive and aerospace industries and discusses the need for new and innovative materials that can make game-changing advances possible.

Next on Monday afternoon, TMS2018 will offer the Additive Manufacturing Keynote Session, a high-level overview of the state of additive manufacturing throughout the world and in various industries. This session is designed to tie together the seven additive manufacturing symposia being held throughout the week on various aspects of this high-interest topic.

On Tuesday morning, the Materials and Manufacturing Innovation Keynote Session, a recurring event sponsored by the TMS Materials Innovation Committee at the TMS Annual Meeting, will feature three invited speakers discussing topics related to data and materials.

Throughout the week, distinguished TMS members will be recognized at honorary symposia, sponsored by the technical divisions of TMS, including:

  • Coupling Advanced Characterization and Modeling Tools for Understanding Fundamental Phase Transformation Mechanisms: A Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division Symposium in Honor of Hamish Fraser
  • Magnesium Alloy Development: A Light Metals Division Symposium in Honor of Karl Kainer
  • Mechanical Characteristics and Application Properties of Metals and Non-metals for Technology: An Extraction & Processing Division Symposium in Honor of Donato Firrao
  • Metal-Matrix Composites Innovations, Advances and Applications: An SMD Symposium in Honor of William C. Harrigan, Jr.

These featured sessions, along with more than 85 symposia planned by all five TMS technical divisions, will be open to all registered TMS2018 attendees. A preliminary technical program and access to the TMS2018 session sheets are now available through the TMS2018 programming website to help you plan your week and take a closer look at the meeting’s technical offerings. Sign up for JOM Issue Alerts

TMS members receive free electronic access to the member journal, JOM, which allows readers to view current issues and archives dating back to 1949. 

For a monthly notification every time a new issue of the journal is published online, sign up to have table of contents alerts e-mailed to you from TMS’s publishing partner, Springer. At a glance, you’ll be able to pick out the articles related to your interests and you’ll be able to read them before the print version of the journal arrives in your mailbox. To sign up for table of contents alerts, visit the JOM home page on Springer, scroll down to the “Alerts for this Journal” heading on the right side of the page, and enter your e-mail address in the box. 

Each table of contents alert message will instruct you to log in through the TMS website before accessing any of the articles to ensure that members receive unrestricted access to article content. You’ll find the login link immediately above the listing of articles in each e-mail alert. This link will take you to the TMS journals web page, where you can click on the “Read This Journal” link under JOM. You’ll be prompted to log in with your TMS username and password before being directed to the Springer site to begin reading. This sign in step is an important one because if you proceed to the Springer site without first logging in, you won’t be able to access the full content of the journal. Those who are not TMS members or JOM subscribers can only access select articles, not the full content. 

Please note: If you prefer to access JOM exclusively online (no print copy mailed to you), you can update your TMS member profile to indicate this preference (find it under “My Details”). 

Table of contents alerts are also available for other TMS journals. To make the most of your TMS membership, you can also sign up for new issue alerts for Integrating Materials and Manufacturing Innovation, Journal of Electronic Materials, Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy, Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B to receive notifications when new content is available.
NCEES Seeks Input on Fundamentals of Engineering Exam 

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) is soliciting input from the community on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. Every six to eight years, NCEES questions the population of engineering educators and practitioners about the topics that need to be included on the FE examination. The process, known as content review or job analysis, involves assembling a panel of subject-matter experts to first develop a questionnaire and to then later use the data from the questionnaire to develop the exam specifications. 

The FE exam is a prerequisite for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) licensing exam, which is used to determine those individuals who are minimally competent for professional registration licensing. TMS takes a lead role in developing the test employed by the NCEES to register professional metallurgical and materials engineers in the United States.  

To participate in the NCEES panel, you must have passed the FE exam. PEs are preferred, but not required. To volunteer or for more information, contact Cheryl Warren, NCEES Exam Development Engineer.

Nominations Due January 16 for TMS Board of Directors 

The deadline to submit nominees for the 2019–2022 TMS Board of Directors is January 16, 2018. The open positions for this cycle are the Presidential Rotation and Membership and Student Development Director. 

The Presidential Rotation encompasses three successive one-year positions: Vice President, President, and Past President. All three roles are officer positions within the Society and carry unique responsibilities; the role of President includes serving as chair of the Board of Directors. 

The Membership and Student Development Director represents the entire membership in carrying out the professional activities of the Society concerned with its professional and student membership and related activities, including recruitment and retention, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and other issues consistent with the Society’s strategic plan. 

Packages for applicants to these positions will be considered by the Society’s Nominating Committee, which will then recommend a candidate for each position to the Board of Directors. If approved by the Board of Directors, these endorsed candidates will be presented to the general membership for approval in July 2018. In addition to these two positions, the 2019–2022 Board will welcome three new directors filling the Technical Division Chair positions: Light Metals Division, Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division, and Structural Materials Division. These candidates are not advanced to the Board of Directors via the Nominating Committee but rather by the respective Technical Division Councils.
