Fundamentals of Friction Stir Welding and Processing Curriculum
June 9-11, 2013 • University of North Texas • Denton, Texas

The program schedule begins on Sunday evening with a welcome reception. Classroom instruction runs Monday and Tuesday (two full days).

Tentative course curriculum:

Day 1: Session 1 (9 a.m.-12 p.m.)
  • Overview of friction stir welding and examples of adoptions; highlights and issues – 30 minutes
  • Fundamentals of the friction stir process- part I; process parameters – 40 minutes
  • Fundamental of friction stir process- part II; material flow and microstructural evolution – 40 minutes
  • Fundamental of friction stir process- part III; history of tool development – 40 minutes
Lunch Break (12-1 p.m.) – networking and question/answer session with instructors

Day 1: Session 2 (1-5 p.m.)
  • Weld configurations and tool selection; gaps and mismatches – 50 minutes
  • FSW of aluminum alloys; low strength alloys, tailor welded blanks and tool/process design to maximize productivity – 50 minutes
  • FSW of aluminum alloys; high strength alloys and strategies to maximize joint efficiency – 50 minutes
  • FSW of high temperature alloys; issues with tool materials and examples of steels – 50 minutes
  • FSW of titanium and nickel base alloys; issues with tool material – 50 minutes
Day 2: Session 1 (8:30-9:50 a.m.)
  • Friction stir processing; overview of derivative processes and potential – 80 minutes
Day 2: Session 2 (10:10 a.m.-12:00 p.m.)
  • Friction stir welding and processing machines; design, capabilities and controls; discussion of requirements and specification – 110 minutes
Lunch break (12-1 p.m.) – networking and question/answer session with equipment manufacturers

Day 2: Session 3 (1-2:30 p.m.)
  • Hands-on friction stir welding and processing demonstrations – 70 minutes
  • Demonstration related questions – 20 minutes
Day 2: Session 4 (3-4:30 p.m.)
  • Implementation of friction stir welding and processing - 45 minutes
  • Discussion on issues raised by participants - 45 minutes
Day 2- adjourn at 5 p.m.
