Young Leader Luncheon

Date: Monday, November 10, 2003
Time: 12:00PM-2:00PM
Location: Hyatt Regency Chicago
Presented by: Dr. George Spanos, Naval Research Labs

About the presenter: George Spanos received his B.S. (1982), M.E. (1985) and Ph.D. (1989) degrees in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from Carnegie Mellon University. In 1989 he joined the Physical Metallurgy Branch of the Naval Research Laboratory as a staff scientist and in 1994 was promoted to his current position of Section Head of the Joining and Phase Transformations Section. Dr. Spanosís experimental research is primarily optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and computer-based techniques for the three-dimensional reconstruction and analysis of microstructures, in order to study solid state phase transformations and joining processes. In particular, his research interests include the experimental study and modeling of the kinetics, thermodynamics, morphological evolution, crystallography and overall mechanisms of solid-state phase transformations, as well as processing-microstructure-property relationships developed during the joining of materials. Dr. Spanos is the author/co-author of 57 technical publications and 82 presentations in these research areas.

The Young Leaders Tutorial Lecture includes an optional “brown bag” lunch for $25, which should be purchased in advance using the enclosed registration form. There will be no charge for those attending the lecture that do not wish to purchase the lunch.

A. Finkl & Sons Company is a leading supplier of forging die steels, plastic mold steels, die casting tool steels and custom open die forgings. Finkl open die forgings are produced at our fully integrated production facility in the heart of Chicago’s Near North Side. Their steel is distributed domestically and to more than 18 countries worldwide.

Fink’s melt shop has two electric arc furnaces capable of tapping 90-ton heats. All heats are processed through our patented VAD process. They melt a wide variety of steel grades from low alloy steels to stainless steel, all in the same week. They also possess a full laboratory including an SEM. Two open die forge shops utilize presses ranging for 500-ton to 6000-ton. After forging, all products are processed through the heat-treating operation, and then the majority of the forgings are rough machined before shipping.

With more than 100 patents to its credit, Finkl’s steel formulations and steel-making technologies continue to set worldwide standards. In recognition of Finkl’s product quality, in early 1993 Finkl became the first North American steel producer to receive ISO 9002 certification for making forgings from raw material to finished product.

Finkl recycles more than 95 percent of its waste and has received numerous state and national awards for its recycling and environmental programs. As a result of its “Forging a Fresher America” program, Finkl has planted more than two million trees in Illinois and Wisconsin forests.

A. Finkl & Sons Co. is privately owned and has more than 320 employees. Finkl’s combined domestic and international sales exceed $65 million per year.

Ticket Cost: $25.00
Note: “No private cars or cameras”
