Attendance at 2005 TMS Annual Meeting Climbs 12 Percent
(March 3, 2005, Warrendale, Pennsylvania, USA)… 3,818 science and engineering professionals, students, and exhibitors converged on the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco, California on February 13, 2005 for the 134th Annual Meeting & Exhibition of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). This year’s global exchange saw attendance jump by 12 percent compared to the 3,400 in 2004.
Individuals from 60 countries attended the 259 sessions and presented more than 2,100 papers on scientific research, technological advances, and new product developments. 129 companies, from ABB to Zircar Ceramics Inc., exhibited products and services in metals and materials production, processing, and research.
The session boasting the largest audience resulted from the Global Aluminum Industry Symposium on Tuesday, February 15 when over 500 people listened to six of the world’s top aluminum producers present “The Role of Technology in the Global Primary Aluminum Industry Today and in the Future.” Executives from Alcan Primary Metal Group, Canada; Alcoa Primary Products, USA; Alumina and Aluminium, Russia; Aluminum Company of China Limited, China; Aluminum Division, Russia; and Hydro Aluminium Primary Metal, Norway presented to the standing-room-only crowd.
TMS’ 2005 Annual Meeting also drew the highest number of students in the 134 year history of the event. 672 future science and engineering professionals attended, representing a 42 percent increase over last year’s students. Many are active in the new Material Advantage Student Program developed by TMS, ASM International, and the American Ceramic Society, which provides students with benefits from all three organizations.
The future of TMS is also being guided by a new president as Tresa M. Pollock of Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, officially accepted her new role at the TMS-AIME Dinner and Awards Presentation on Tuesday, February 15. Pollock is professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan and has been a member of TMS since 1989. The new president stated that she envisions the society’s future and her role as building upon the seeds that have already been planted for collaboration, “Interdisciplinary, collaboration, globalization…that’s TMS.”
Next year’s TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition will be held in San Antonio, Texas, USA, from March 12 through March 16, 2006 and feature such symposia as Three Dimensional Materials Science, Advanced Biomaterials Processing, and Aluminum Reduction. Visit www.tms.org for more details.
