04/19 - New Database Opens World of Metal Matrix Composites to Engineers

(April 19, 2005, WARRENDALE, PA, USA)… A new Web service launched by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) makes previously hard to access information on metal matrix composites (MMC) available to engineers. The Metal Matrix Composites in Industry database offers materials information, previously unknown except to an inner circle of specialists, through search capabilities of 140 companies, 170 materials, and 90 products.

The MMC database is searchable by name of company active in metal matrix composites, by specific materials used or produced, or by product available in the market. The site proves useful to engineers to obtain basic knowledge of metal matrix composites and where to locate them. Presently, this information is not entered into engineering handbooks, so engineers do not naturally design to use them.

A search conducted by company name results in specific information on trade names, primary processing, and applications. Searching by materials presents application areas, specific applications, industries applied, physical characteristics, properties, producers, property advantages, and primary and secondary properties. Lastly, searching by product name provides a description of the specific product, how the material is used in the specific product, other products the material is used in, the companies involved, and the material form.

The site also accumulates data through a survey of the current activity in industry in this new and growing area of materials technology, which is beneficial to researchers and academicians. The online MMC content is updated periodically by the Composite Materials Committee of TMS. The original content is based on the book authored by Alexander Evans, Christopher San Marchi, and Andreas Mortensen, “Metal Matrix Composites in Industry: An Introduction & Survey.” It is published by Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The MMC database is accessible through membership in TMS. Membership information may be found at www.tms.org.

TMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators, and administrators from more than 70 countries on six continents.
