TMS Awards Scholarships to University Students
(WARRENDALE, PA, USA) The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) awarded scholarships to two university students at the Materials Science & Technology Conference (MS&T) in Pittsburgh, Pa., on September 25, 2005. Jennifer Cutting, from the University of British Columbia, and Elyssa Cutler, from the University of Florida, each received a $2,000 cash scholarship toward their majors in metallurgical/materials science and engineering.
The International Symposium on Superalloys Scholarship is awarded to students in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering majors with an emphasis on all aspects of the high-temperature, high-performance materials used in the gas turbine industry and all other applications. “I am truly honored to have been selected as a recipient of the TMS Superalloys Scholarship,” remarked Cutting, a member of the Material Advantage Student Program. “This award will be instrumental in helping me further my interest and studies in materials for gas turbine blades and high performance alloy applications. Thank you to TMS for their invaluable, generous support of student activities.”
The scholarship is made possible through the organizing committee of the International Symposium on Superalloys and the TMS Student Affairs Committee. It is awarded based on the student’s application, academic achievements, activities, leadership, personal profile statement, and letters of recommendation. “TMS has played a pivotal role in my professional development throughout graduate school, providing me valuable opportunities to present my research and meet professionals from all over the world,” commented Cutler, also a member of the Materials Advantage Student Program. “After four years of superalloys research, to be recognized by TMS with this scholarship is a great honor. I hope to continue my involvement as I transition into industry.”
TMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators and administrators from more than 70 countries on six continents.
