05/4 - TMS Announces New Technical Director


(WARRENDALE, PA, USA)…The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) has appointed Todd M. Osman, Ph.D., of Murrysville, Pa., as technical director. Osman took over the position on May 1, which was vacated by Warren H. Hunt Jr. Hunt was named to replace retiring executive director Alexander Scott last month.

Osman brings a strong background in industrial research and management from his 10 years at United States Steel Corporation, where his most recent role was technical manager of the Product Technology Division, Research. He has also been instrumental in the founding of the Pennsylvania NanoMaterials Commercialization Center, a nonprofit research and development organization, having served as treasurer on the governing board.

TMS’ new technical director has been actively engaged in the materials community through his involvement in professional organizations. Osman formed the TMS Product Metallurgy and Applications Committee, which he now chairs, and has also been a member of the TMS Strategic Planning Advisory Committee. In addition, Osman held various positions with the former Iron and Steel Society, now known as the Association for Iron & Steel Technology.

Osman received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in materials science and engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He also interned at the Alcoa Technical Center and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

As TMS technical director, Osman is responsible for technical programming, professional development, and liaison with technical divisions and committees. In addition, he will facilitate development and implementation of initiatives supporting the TMS strategic plan to capture emerging technologies while continuing to grow current core areas.

TMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials in science and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators and administrators from more than 70 countries on six continents.
