September 10-14, 2001
Louisville, Kentucky

To be held September 10-14, 2001, at the Camberley Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, Aluminum Electrolysis is a 4.5-day course on the theoretical and practical aspects of primary aluminum production. It provides a better understanding of the electrolysis process and an overview of the state of the art. Its goal is to promote more efficient operation of aluminum smelters and stimulate corresponding research and development. This year's course will be further enhanced by an on-site visit to a prebake aluminum smelter.

This course is directed to anyone who operates Hall-Heroult cells or contributes to the development of aluminum production technology. Lectures will be presented by an international faculty. Extensive group discussions will cover solving technical problems at aluminum smelters to increase production, lower energy consumption, improve metal quality, and reduce environmental emissions. The following topics will be covered: Alumina Properties, Anode Carbon, Bath Chemistry Cathode Blocks, Cathode Refractories, Cathode Start-Up, Cell Modernization, Cell Operations & C.E.%, Magnetic Modeling Perfluorocarbon, Emissions, Practical Application to Operations, Principles of Aluminum Electrolysis, Process Control, Process Simulation, Producing Good Quality Anodes, Tour of Aluminum Smelter, Smelter Organizational Structure and Management Style, and Workers’ Health, Safety and Hygiene.

TMS Textbook Teaches Phase Transformations

The second edition of LECTURES ON THE THEORY OF PHASE TRANSFORMATIONS, available from Publications@TMS, is an updated version of the first edition, popular in graduate courses on phase transformations and broader topics of which transformations are an important component. This text presents more detailed mathematics than do most monographs, textbooks, or research and review papers.

All of the first edition's principal authors have updated their work in this volume, and a tutorial overview of the effects of coherency on phase equilibria and phase transformations has been added. The papers “Applications of Gibbs Energy-Composition Diagrams,” “Theory of Capillarity,” “The Kinetic Equations of Solid-Solid Nucleation Theory and Comparisons with Experimental Observations,” and “Moving Phase Boundary Problems” have all been updated.

WinPhaD Software Enhances Learning

Computer Aided Instruction Software Packages offered by Publications@TMS assist teachers and students in the learning process by offering learning opportunities outside of the textbook. More interactive and often more involving than standard textbooks, these software packages allow students to independently learn concepts at their own pace.

WinPhaD
Software for Calculating Phase Diagrams and Thermodynamic Properties in Binary Systems
WinPhaD combines a powerful calculation engine with a user-friendly Windows 95/98/NT-based graphical interface similar to popular Windows programs, such as Word. Designed for engineers and scientists who use phase diagrams as a tool for research and development, WinPhaD is easy for the novice and effective for the expert.

WinPhaD affords several advantages over traditional handbooks and existing software packages:

  • In addition to stable phase diagram normally found in handbooks, users can also calculate metastable phase diagrams and special features of a system, such as T0 lines and spinodals.
  • WinPhaD can calculate thermodynamic properties of a chosen phase at a given temperature and composition, such as the activity of a component element
  • The calculation engine never requires initial values. In systems with miscibility gaps, the program will automatically calculate the phase diagram including the miscibility gaps; other programs require users to give specific instructions prior to calculating the phase diagrams.
  • Many calculations and diagrams can be made with a single click
  • Since WinPhaD is Windows-based, any of the calculations can be readily imported into reports or manuscripts
  • The database can be updated as new assessments and experimental data become available.

Single User
Order No. 4542
Price $199

Multiple Users
