Nominate a Deserving Individual for the National Materials Advancement Award

The Federation of Materials Societies (FMS) invites nominations by June 15, 2002, for the National Materials Advancement Award, which will be presented at a reception on December 11, 2002, following the FMS Annual Meeting.

This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding capabilities in advancing the effective and economic use of materials and the multi-disciplinary field of materials science and engineering generally, and who contribute significantly to the application of the materials profession to national problems and policy. Nominations must be submitted in the form of a letter by a Trustee or staff representative of TMS, or any FMS member society, explaining why the nominee’s accomplishments in the materials policy field are considered to be outstanding.

For more information on how to initiate a nomination, contact Nellie Luther at (724) 776-9000, ext. 213, or natale@tms.org.

TMS Technical Committees Make Changes to Match Changing Society Interests

At February’s annual meeting, three TMS technical divisions made changes to their technical committees that reflect trends in the society as a whole.

The Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division created the new Phase Transformations Committee, a joint committee with ASM International that will focus on activities oriented toward the fundamental aspects of phase transformations.

The Superconducting Materials Committee, a joint committee of the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division and Structural Materials Division was renamed the Superconducting and Magnetic Materials Committee, reflecting an expansion of the committee’s technical emphasis area to include magnetic materials.

The Structural Materials Division disbanded the Ferrous Metallurgy Committee and the Nonferrous Metals Committee. Over the past few decades, TMS programming has transformed from committees focused on individual metal and alloy types to cross-cutting materials technical areas. While ferrous metallurgy and nonferrous metals are still important topics to the society and its members, they are covered in other technical areas, such as mechanical behavior, structural metals, corrosion, and light metals.

TMS Offers Members a Cancer Insurance Plan

Cancer Insurance Plan
Because your basic medical insurance may not be enough.

According to information provided by the American Cancer Society in 2000, U.S. men have a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of developing cancer; for women the risk is 1 in 3. Basic health insurance may not be enough to cover the newest cancer treatments and procedures. For example, chemotherapy is a very expensive form of treatment, and many major medical plans have a limit on out-of-pocket expenses. Without supplemental insurance, your savings could be in jeopardy.

Our cancer insurance plan is designed to help alleviate the financial strain associated with your cancer therapy. This insurance plan is a valuable benefit for all members and their families, and if in 30 days you are not satisfied with this coverage for any reason, simply return your certificate and your premium will be refunded.

For information regarding this plan, contact the Plan Administrator, Selman & Company, at 1-800-556-7614, customerservice@selman.cc, or The TMS Members' Insurance Program, 6110 Parkland Blvd., Cleveland, Ohio 44124.
