2004 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
March 14-18, 2004 * Charlotte, North Carolina

To present the most current developments in the most topical and active areas of research and practical application, TMS has added the following hot-topic symposia to its 2004 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition line-up:

NANOSTRUCTURED MAGNETIC MATERIALS
Abstract due date: July 15, 2003
This symposium will highlight recent scientific results and technological advances in the field of nanostructured magnetic materials and devices. Topics will include self-assembly and nanomagnetism, magnetic thin films and surfaces, ferromagnetic semiconductors, and GMR and spin-dependent tunneling. Special focus will be on the fundamental studies of growth, structure, magnetic properties, and spin dynamics, with particular emphasis on spintronic devices, GMR materials, and magnetic recording media. Publication of a proceedings volume is planned.

MATERIALS ISSUES IN FUEL CELLS
Abstract due date: October 31, 2003
Fuel cells are at the threshold of becoming one of the most viable forms of energy conversion devices, but first, significant material challenges have to be overcome. TMS invites abstracts from scientists and engineers that describe the state-of-the-art in fuel cell research and development from a materials perspective. This session will include plenary lectures from leading experts and eminent researchers who will present a comprehensive analysis of materials challenges in fuel cells. Papers are scheduled for publication in JOM.

ADVANCED MATERIALS IN RACECARS
Abstract due date: October 31, 2003
Present-day racecars are engineering marvels that are pushed to their performance limits. Speed and safety are of paramount concern. Materials design and performance challenges are encountered in the frame, the body, the engine, the tire, and the on-board devices. This symposium provides a look at materials issues in the fascinating world of racecars. Experts from the field of racecar design, development, and engineering will present invited plenary talks. Presentations are invited on racecar-related material issues to address novel advanced developments. Papers are scheduled for publication in JOM.

For more information or to submit an abstract for these and more than 50 other symposia planned for the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition, visit the TMS Conference Management System (CMS):

10. New Reports on Economics of Metals and Minerals Now Available
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TMS has added two new titles to its list of available Roskill Reports on Metals and Minerals. Roskill Reports provide a complete assessment of an industry and its markets, giving expert and authoritative analysis. The newest editions are:
* The Economics of Manganese (10th edition, 2003)
According to this report, world production of contained manganese reached 7.6 Mt in 2001 and remained around that level in 2002, marking a strong recovery from the late 1990s when output was hit by a slump in the global steel industry. World output is soon set to match the 1996 peak of 8.2 Mt, Roskill predicts.
Price: $3,075
* The Economics of Talc and Pyrophyllite (9th edition, 2003)
According to this report, the main areas of growth for talc in the next few years are likely to lie outside its two main end-uses of paper and ceramics. Talc faces increasing competition in both markets, as precipitated and ground calcium carbonate take increasing market share for paper fillers and the refractories industry adopts higher-performance mag-carbon and dolomite-carbon products in place of pyrophyllite.
Price: $2,275
Purchase copies of these and other Roskill Reports through the TMS Document Center. Roskill Reports can be found in the Proceedings, Textbooks, & Papers section:
