1. New Web Site Answers Technical Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On August 7th, TMS is launching a new web site, Technical Questions@TMS--a resource for materials scientists and engineers, as well as the general public--to help users find answers to all manner of technical questions. The site is divided into five sections: aluminum, portals, universities, newsgroups and listservs, and intellectual property.
The most robust component of the new site is the aluminum section. This interactive utility provides answers to frequently asked technical and general questions regarding aluminum. All information is sorted by an array of technical interest areas. Content for each technical interest area comprises frequently asked questions, technical summaries, recommended reading, and web links. If none of the information helps the visitor answer his or her technical question, a form is available whereby a specific question can be submitted directly to a subject matter expert. A return response should follow in approximately 48 hours, if not sooner.
The aluminum segment of Technical Questions@TMS will be available on a trial basis through early 2004. If the pilot program on aluminum is successful, TMS may expand the concept to additional materials technologies. In making this decision, your feedback will be a critical consideration. So, please complete the on-line survey form that appears when you visit the site.
2. Electronic Dues Bills Mailed in August
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This month, dues bills will be sent via e-mail to all existing TMS members who have e-mail addresses on file with the society. The e-mails will provide members a dues summary and provide a link to the society’s on-line renewal form. From here, the user can modify his or her record as appropriate and then submit a secure payment.

With this year’s dues billing, all members will be asked to identify their core areas of technical competency from a standardized list of keywords. Early in 2004, these keywords will be added to the on-line membership directory so that members will be able to search for colleagues based on technical interests. Participation in the keyword program is strictly voluntary. Anyone not wishing to be a part of the search can simply indicate such using a check box on the dues bill.

For those who prefer to receive dues bills in print and/or do not have e-mail addresses, hard copies of the dues bills will be mailed in October to any members who have yet to renew on-line for 2004.

3. Journals Adopt On-Line Submission and Review System
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TMS has introduced a new on-line review and submission system to improve and accelerate the peer-review process for its archival journals: the Journal of Electronic Materials (JEM), Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A (MMTA), and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B (MMTB).
Through the new system, authors can upload files directly from their computers to a secure on-line site, from which the journal’s editor may administer the review process. This system is expected to provide an easy and prompt method for submitting articles and to shorten the editorial and review processes of the journals. TMS expects to receive all manuscript submissions to its archival journals through this system by January 1, 2004.
To submit a paper to JEM through the new on-line system, go to:
http://jem.electronicipc.com
To submit a paper to MMTA, go to:
http://mmta.electronicipc.com
To submit a paper to MMTB, go to:
6. Nominate Colleagues for TMS Awards
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is extremely important that TMS continues to recognize those who have done so much for the profession of the international minerals, metals, and materials community and for the society. Recognition of an individual by his/her peers is one of life’s greatest honors. TMS invites you to nominate a deserving individual for the appropriate award.

Award criteria and a list of previous award recipients are available at http://www.tms.org/Society/honors.html. To submit a nomination, fill out the nomination form at http://www.tms.org/Society/nomination-form.pdf and forward the required biography, publications list, and letters of endorsement to TMS. The annual Society Award nomination deadline is October 31, and the annual Division Award nomination deadline is March 31.
