2. TMS Membership Directory Features New Search Options
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In response to member requests, TMS has added two new search features to the TMS Membership Directory, the on-line networking tool that allows TMS members to seek out other members with similar professional interests.
TMS members can now search the directory by area of technical expertise and by professional registration (U.S. registrations only). Areas of technical expertise were identified by members when responding to their 2004 dues invoices. The professional registration designation is searchable by state.
To use the new TMS Membership Directory search features, visit the members-only sector of the TMS web site at:
http://members.tms.org
Members must log in using their TMS membership number as a user I.D. and their birthdate (in the form of MM/DD/YYYY) as a password to access the directory. Use of the directory is available exclusively to TMS members. If you wish to update the content of your record (including your areas of technical expertise and/or professional registrations), you may do so at the members-only web site by clicking the "View/Update My Membership Record" button.
5. Humanoid Robots, Light Metals, and 2004 TMS Annual Meeting Featured in November JOM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With a focus on light metals, the November issue of JOM probes topics in high-temperature magnesium and aluminum processing. This issue also serves as the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting preview issue, featuring a detailed preshow report, technical program, and registration and housing forms.

“Personification: The Materials Science and Engineering of Humanoid Robots” by Maureen Byko is the free html-enhanced article of the month. This in-depth feature provides an eye-opening look at advances in robots that can mimic humans. Robots are being built to help tend to patients in nursing homes, to play soccer against humans, and even to engage in friendly conversation. With advances in technology and materials science, robots are becoming ever more lifelike and bringing science fiction closer to reality.

This article can be viewed at:
http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/0311/Byko-0311.html

TMS members and non-member electronic subscribers can view the entire issue on-line today through the TMS Document Center at:
http://doc.tms.org

To access electronic subscriptions, TMS members must log in to the Document Center using their TMS membership number as a user name and their birthdate (in the form of MM/DD/YYYY) as a password. Logged-in members will have access to any article in the JOM archive, which dates back to 1997.

For further reading on the light metals issues presented in the November issue of JOM, TMS offers approximately 90 publications related to aluminum, electrometallurgy, environmental issues, high-temperature materials, lightweight materials, manufacturing/markets, titanium, and other nonferrous issues.

Find a selection of these books in the Publications@TMS ad on pages 52 and 53 of the November issue of JOM, or visit the TMS Document Center, where you can search for relevant publications using the topics listed above as keywords:

8. User Feedback Determines Future of Technical Questions@TMS: Aluminum
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Technical Questions@TMS: Aluminum, the aluminum component of the new Technical Questions@TMS on-line resource, provides answers to frequently asked technical and general questions regarding processing, fabrication, and applications of aluminum. Visitors to the site can find keyword-driven frequently asked questions and technical primers, links to significant publications and web sites, information about learning opportunities (meetings, short courses, and the like), and the opportunity to submit a question to a technical expert who will answer via e-mail in approximately 48 hours, if not sooner.
As the aluminum site is a pilot for a potentially larger, more expansive on-line materials information program, your feedback will be not only helpful but essential in future decision making. Please complete the on-line survey form that appears when you visit the site.
