1. How You Can Influence Congressional Visit Days
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While the TMS Public & Governmental Affairs Committee and the Federation of Materials Societies are hopeful of members making a trip to Washington, D.C., in early March to take part in Congressional Visit Days 2004 (see the January JOM for more detail), we all realize that most materials scientists and engineers will be unable to take part in the on-site activities. Therefore, these groups have combined to develop a form letter that individual members of the materials community in the United States may use to express support for this initiative to Senators and Representatives.
For details on this call to action (and a copy of a convenient-to-complete form letter), please visit the society's Public and Governmental Affairs Resource Center at:
http://www.tms.org/PGA/call.html
The few minutes that you take to perform this exercise can have a deep impact on the legislators who make many of the decisions that affect our field and profession.
13. TMS Offers On-Line Short Course on Metal-Matrix Composites
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Metal-Matrix Composites on-line short course is introductory in nature and provides a comprehensive overview of metal-matrix composites (MMCs), addressing processing, properties, and applications, with a special focus on lightweighting and aluminum.

Metal-matrix composites are becoming increasingly important in industrial applications, such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, thermal management, and wear applications. The Metal-Matrix Composites course satisfies the information needs of a variety of audiences. Physicists, aerospace engineers, mechanical engineers, design engineers, and industrial engineers who find that their work can benefit from a thorough understanding of the processing, properties, and application opportunities for MMCs will find the course provides this information in a highly accessible and affordable format. Undergraduate materials science students can obtain a basic overview of MMCs that could be beneficial as supplementary course work. Since the course is presented at a level that is easily understandable to the layman, it is also a perfect tool to provide non-technical sales and marketing personnel a basic understanding of the design, development, and applications of these materials.

The course comprises six self-contained modules consisting of audio, visual, and text teaching materials. Completion time for the entire course is approximately eight hours. A free course preview and on-line registration are available via the TMS Document Center at:
