2004 TMS Annual Meeting
March 14-18, 2004 * Charlotte, North Carolina

“I overheard a number of comments from attendees about the quality of the symposia. That is what TMS continually strives to achieve at every conference that we hold or sponsor.” So said Greg Hildeman, 2004 TMS president, about this year's TMS Annual Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. Here, approximately 1,650 technical presentations were delivered at a record 53 symposia. A total of 3,435 individuals attended this year’s conference, 40% of whom traveled to Charlotte from more than 60 countries. A record 472 attendees were students.

For complete meeting coverage, see the News & Update section of the May JOM. For a quick visual souvenir of meeting events, visit the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting photo gallery on the web:

2. TMS Announces Winners of the JOM DVD Raffle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting, many attendees entered their tickets in the JOM exhibit booth DVD raffle, which offered attendees the chance to win the movies featured in “The Reel Thing: One Editor’s List of Great Material Moments in the Movies,” by JOM Editor James J. Robinson. This article, featured in the March 2004 issue of JOM, was the inspiration for this year’s popcorn-and-movie-themed exhibit booth.
Winning tickets were drawn each day in the exhibit hall. The drawing winners and their prizes are:
* V. Latysh: Theremin
* K. Chittenden: The Absent-Minded Professor
* C. Wong: Terminator 2: Judgment Day
* T.T. Chen: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
* L. Evrard: Minority Report
* T. Thornton: Blade Runner
* J. Yu: Forbidden Planet
* S. Gerdemann: Star Trek IV
* G. Wolter: Goldfinger
* G. Cole: X-Men
* M. Calhoun: Superman
* S. Andrick: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
* M. Mandagie: The Graduate
For those winners who did not claim their prizes at the meeting, the movies will be shipped to them. If you have not yet read the article, you will find it on the web at: http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/0403/Robinson/Robinson.html
3. Proceedings Volumes and TMS Letters Capture 2004 TMS Annual Meeting Presentations
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Missed the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting? TMS proceedings offer a permanent record of the event. Papers from more than a dozen meeting symposia were compiled into proceedings publications in book format. Proceedings not available in book format may be available as post-conference proceedings, papers in TMS journals, or technical updates in the inaugural issue of the on-line journal TMS Letters, scheduled for publication later this month.

The following volumes are currently available as TMS books:

* Advanced Materials for Energy Conversion II
* Advances in Superplasticity and Superplastic Forming
* Cost-Affordable Titanium
* EPD Congress 2004
* Multiphase Phenomena and CFD Modeling and Simulation in Materials Processes
* Laterite Nickel Symposium 2004
* Light Metals 2004
* Magnesium Technology 2004
* Solidification of Aluminum Alloys
* Solidification Processes and Microstructures: A Symposium in Honor of Prof. W. Kurz
* Surfaces and Interfaces in Nanostructured Materials and Trends in LIGA, Miniaturization, and Nanoscale Materials, The Fifth Global Innovations Symposium on Materials Processing and Manufacturing
* Ultrafine Grained Materials III

In addition, approximately 80 papers from ten symposia at the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting were submitted for publication consideration in TMS Letters, the new on-line journal from TMS. Papers selected for publication through TMS Letters’ peer-review process will be presented as two-page technical updates that include both text and graphics. Several issues of TMS Letters will be published from the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting, each one containing a selection of technical updates focused on a common theme.

6. Showcase Products and Services at Upcoming TMS Conferences
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each year, TMS offers a number of opportunities for organizations to showcase their products and services to the versatile and professional audiences found at TMS meetings. Currently, TMS offers exhibit opportunities at two upcoming meetings: The 2004 Electronic Materials Conference and Materials Science & Technology 2004.
2004 Electronic Materials Conference Exhibition
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
June 23-24, 2004 * University of Notre Dame * Notre Dame, Indiana

This exhibit is hosted by the 2004 Electronic Materials Conference, sponsored by the Electronic, Magnetic, & Photonic Materials Division of TMS.

Exhibiting companies will meet the world’s leading international researchers and management professionals in electronic materials from corporations, universities, and government labs.

Industry organizations are invited to display equipment, publications, software, and services relative to electronic materials applications and research.

Materials Science & Technology (MS&T ’04) Exhibition
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
September 26-28, 2004 * New Orleans Marriott Hotel * New Orleans, Louisiana
MS&T ‘04 is designed to attract participants from the global ferrous, nonferrous, and materials industries, together with university and lab affiliations.
This exhibit will bring the MS&T ’04 technical sessions to life with an outstanding display of practical, hands-on information. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to network with more than 400 pre-qualified attendees who are eager to learn about your company’s products and capabilities. The MS&T ‘04 exhibit is their source for the problem-solving solutions that they can put to work today.
The exhibition will be visited by decision-makers seeking solutions to challenges in metals and materials, specifically in the following technologies:
* Mechanical Operation
* Metals Production
* Modeling and Characterization
* Materials Processing Methodologies
* Testing and Analysis
The Grand Opening Reception will be held on Monday, September 27, 2004, from 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
