Materials Education for the 21st Century Workforce
May 24-25, 2004 * National Academies’ Keck Center * Washington, DC

The 18th Biennial Conference on National Materials Policy, "Materials Education for the 21st Century Workforce," is a follow-up to the successful 2002 conference "Materials Education: Opportunities Over a Lifetime." This year’s conference will again be sponsored by the Federation of Materials Societies (of which TMS is a member society) with program participation by the University Materials Council, the National Materials Advisory Board, and the ASM Materials Education Foundation.

John H. Hopps, Jr., deputy director of Defense Research and Engineering for the U.S. Department of Defense, will give the luncheon address, and the program will feature invited talks focusing on:
* The changing undergraduate and graduate materials curricula
* Continuing education/community colleges
* Informal education
* Programs to enhance K-12 education in materials science and technology
* Global workforce issues and the status of facilities for materials research

A Materials Mini-Camp will be held for high school teachers and students to acquaint them with materials science and engineering as a field of study and a career path. Participants will work during the day and present a summary of their projects and findings during the conference banquet.

3. May JOM Features Magnesium, Titanium, and 2004 TMS Annual Meeting Coverage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The focus of the May issue of JOM is fabricating light metals, and coverage includes two collections of in-depth technical papers on magnesium wrought alloys and processes and titanium-boride alloys and composites. In addition, this issue features an interview with Arden L. Bement, Jr., a TMS member serving as acting director of the U.S. National Science Foundation and as director of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology; a special edition of News & Update that includes coverage of the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting and a comprehensive look at the worldwide magnesium industry; and an End Notes article on interpreting engineering statistics.
To sample this month’s coverage and to view sample articles from prior months, visit the following web site:
http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/articles.html
For further reading on fabricating light metals, TMS offers more than 65 publications on the topics of aluminum, lightweight materials, mechanical properties, nonferrous materials, shaping and forming, and titanium, including books from the annual Magnesium Technology and Light Metals proceedings series as well as new titles from the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting. To view a complete list of available titles on these topics, visit the subject index of the “Proceedings, Textbooks, and Papers” section of the TMS Document Center at:
4. TMS Letters Scheduled for Publication Later this Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first issues of TMS Letters--the newest benefit of TMS membership--are scheduled for publication later this month at the TMS Document Center. These first issues will contain approximately 60 papers from ten symposia presented at the 2004 TMS Annual Meeting. Papers will be presented as two-page technical updates--including text and graphics--in downloadable portable document format.

TMS members will be able to access the electronic journal free-of-charge as a benefit of membership by logging in to the TMS Document Center using their TMS member number as a username and their date of birth in the form of mm/dd/yyyy as a password.

5. TMS Document Center Offers Discounts to Frequent Download Customers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The TMS Document Center is a rich source of materials science and engineering research, with articles available for download from JOM, Journal of Electronic Materials, Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A & B, and selected TMS proceedings volumes.
For organizations and individuals who frequently purchase individual journal articles or proceedings papers through the Document Center, TMS offers the ability to purchase suites of downloads, which are groups of 10, 25, 50, or 100 downloads that can be used over a period of time. Download suites are priced to allow frequent users to save money each time they download an article or paper from the TMS Document Center. For example, a TMS member who purchases 100 download credits saves $250 compared to the amount it would cost to purchase 100 papers or articles individually.
Download suites are ideal for organizations where many individuals have the need to download portions of TMS publications or for individuals compiling a custom publication from papers and articles published in TMS books and journals.
Visit the “Build a Suite of Downloads” section of the TMS Document Center for more information:
6. Shape the Future of the Profession by Becoming an ABET Evaluator
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shape the future of the materials science and engineering professions by becoming an evaluator of college and university materials engineering programs. With the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET), TMS selects and trains groups of qualified evaluators to visit schools and determine if programs meet accreditation standards.

For details on how to apply for the program, contact:
Gail Miller, Executive Assistant and Education Affairs Coordinator
E-mail: gailm@tms.org
