A joint REWAS-LMD symposium on Recycling and Sustainability will be organized as a joint session with Cast Shop Technology. The usage of light metals in the aerospace, automotive and packaging industries has been rising due to their outstanding properties. The importance of recycling and sustainable metal casting has risen in the last decades dramatically due to the increasing demand on primary resources and environmental concerns. Innovative solutions are needed to increase the efficiency in metal processing and treatment for complex scraps. This joint session within the Cast Shop Technology explores novel and improved recycling technologies for complex scraps, mechanical and thermal pre-treatment of scraps, new recycling and refining processes, economic and environmental impacts of recycling, incl. life cycle assessment.

2025 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition: Scandium Extraction and Use in Aluminum Alloys: Organized by Timothy Langan; Les Edwards

Scandium is a high-impact alloying addition to aluminum having beneficial effects on several properties and in many aluminum alloy systems. However, the use of aluminum scandium alloys has been limited to low volume, special applications due to the high price of scandium. New sources of scandium are emerging with potentially lower costs in the form of new mines, red mud extraction, extraction from nickel ores and as a by-product of titanium pigment and slag production. Papers on scandium extraction and use in aluminum alloy systems are sought for this symposium. Papers on the metallurgy of aluminium scandium alloy systems and applications are also required. Session topics will include: • Scandium extraction from by products • Aluminum scandium alloys (joint session with aluminum alloys symposium) • Aluminum scandium alloys additive manufacture. MS&T24: Materials Science & Technology: Light Alloys, Advanced Forming Processes and Characterization: Organized by Scott Taylor; Ishwar Kapoor; Hiren Kotadia

This symposium aims to bring together researchers and engineers from both academia and industry to discuss and share ideas and current advances in the field of light alloys. The symposium will have a focus on but not be limited to advances in light alloys such as high recycled content aluminiums, advanced forming processes for use with high strength light alloys for the purpose of producing automotive lightweight structures and new characterization techniques. Papers and talks that describe studies and current advances on the following topics are invited: Development of new light alloys in particular aluminium, magnesium, and alloys with high recycled content. Advanced elevated temperature forming processes such as SPF, QPF, HQF in relation to light alloys. Microstructural studies to understand evolution during forming and the relevance within industrial processes. Related processes such as tribological studies, joining and sustainability. Also welcome are all aspects of research, development and applications relating to light alloys.

One of the outcomes from the honorary symposium for Professor Barry Welch held during the TMS Annual Meeting in 2023 was recognition that there is currently a gap between current typical anode characteristics and customer requirements. The organizers are planning a special workshop session to address the need for step change improvements in carbon anodes, what options are available, and potential actions to help deliver the changes. The workshop format will be presentations followed by facilitated discussion. 2024 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition: Solidification in External Fields: Organized by Andrew Kao; Catherine Tonry; Dmitry Eskin; Laurentiu Nastac; Abdellah Kharicha; Natalia Shevchenko; Jiawei Mi

This Symposium focuses on solidification influenced by external fields, which includes, but is not limited to, solidification in the presence of strong gravitational, acoustic or electromagnetic (EM) fields. The use of external fields has become widespread in a drive for improved materials or better understanding of fundamental phenomena. Examples include the use of magnetic fields to introduce electromagnetic braking of fluid flow or to interact with inherent electric currents to drive flow in processes ranging from traditional casting to additive manufacturing. Or to use electromagnetic fields to levitate droplets of highly reactive metals to understand and measure key material properties, with comparison to experiments under microgravity conditions. Acoustic fields can also drive flow through acoustic streaming, but also cause cavitation of micro bubbles that can refine microstructures. Strong super-gravitational fields can make materials more denser providing improved material properties of soft and condensed matter. The symposium seeks contributions from any process where the introduction of an external field has a significant impact on solidification. As external fields add a new parameter space to many processes a key aim is to develop interdisciplinary discussions. The symposium will bring together world experts to share recent findings, state-of-the-art techniques and to facilitate discussions and knowledge transfer. The aim is to develop research networks between partners that will generate new ideas and direction for long-term collaborations.

MS&T23: Materials Science & Technology: Advanced Joining Technologies for Automotive Lightweight Structures: Organized by Yan Huang; Yingchun Chen

The symposium aims to bring about an intensive exchange of fundamental understanding and technological advances of automotive lightweight structure joining solutions, among worldwide academics, research scientists and expert automotive engineers, with focus on aluminium alloys and their joints with steel and polymers. Papers that describe physical experiments, joint design, characterization and assessment, and process simulation and optimization on the following key joining technologies are welcome: •Solid state joining methods - friction stir welding (FSW), self-piercing riveting (SPR), and magnetic pulse welding (MPW), etc. •Fusion welding and resistance welding- laser beam welding (LBW), electron beam welding (EBW), Cold metal transfer (CMT) welding, resistance spot welding, etc. •Hybrid joining methods and adhesive bonding. Also welcome are all aspects of research, development and applications relating to the joining of automotive lightweight structures.

The aluminum industry emits 1.1 billion tons of CO2e per year. Decarbonization of the sector remains a significant challenge. Reducing all GHG emissions has been a long-held ambition for the sector. PFC emissions in particular have been reduced significantly in recent decades due to better process controls, measurement and technological advances. This symposium will look at the ways emissions from primary aluminium production processes are measured and reported with the ultimate aim of overall reduction. Starting his career in process modelling, Jon later tackled more fundamental aspects of solidification modeling at the microstructure level. Scandium is a high-impact alloying addition to aluminum having beneficial effects on several properties and in many aluminum alloy systems. However, the use of aluminum scandium alloys has been limited to low volume, special applications due to the high price of scandium. New sources of scandium are emerging with potentially lower costs in the form of new mines, red mud extraction, extraction from nickel ores and as a by-product of titanium pigment and slag production. Papers on scandium extraction and use in aluminum alloy systems are sought for this symposium. Papers on the metallurgy of aluminium scandium alloy systems and applications are also required.
