TMS/SME/AIME James Douglas Gold Medal

The James Douglas Gold Medal was established in 1922. Dr. James Douglas, founder of Phelps Dodge Corporation and twice President of AIME, was also an AIME Honorary Member. He was an industrialist, a mining engineer, a metallurgical engineer and a noted inventor of metallurgical equipment. This award is administered by TMS's EPD and SME's MPD.

The award recognizes distinguished achievement in non-ferrous metallurgy, including both the benefication of ores and the alloying and utilization of non-ferrous metals.

How to Nominate

Submission Deadline:
June 1 of each year.

Please submit the following documents to complete the nomination process:

  1. Completed nomination form.
  2. Nominator's Supporting Statement: This statement is to be included within the principal nominator’s cover letter of endorsement. The supporting statement should outline the qualifications of the nominee for the specific honor/award. The principal nominator’s letter of endorsement should be no more than two pages.
  3. Current resume or curriculum vitae, no more than 5 pages.
  4. List of papers/publications, abbreviated version – 3 page maximum.
  5. Two to five letters of endorsement are required. Each letter should be no longer than two pages. No more than one letter of endorsement may be from the same affiliation as the nominee. The principal nominator’s letter may be counted in the total number required.
