DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through extramural funding (in disciplines where applicable), high quality publications, impact as measured through citations, performances, and exhibits (in disciplines where applicable), and national recognition as through honorific awards. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry or a related field, and an outstanding track record of scholarly research, extramural funding, and teaching. Successful candidates will teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, develop internationally recognized, externally-funded research programs, and contribute to the operation and promotion of the Department, University, and profession through service.

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS)

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has an immediate opening for a Technical Initiatives Specialist.  The specialist is responsible for development, support, and implementation of efforts in key strategic areas of TMS. The position is within and supports the technical (science and engineering) department at TMS, but involves interacting across all TMS departments (e.g., events, marketing and communication, publications, membership). Additionally, the position interfaces directly with TMS volunteers, committees and other TMS member groups on various meetings and projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Support the Technical Director and Technical Project Leader in the preparation and execution of workshops and road-mapping studies, meetings, technical reports, and grant proposals.
  • Work with staff and external customers (as staff lead or participant) in contributing to the execution of a variety of TMS initiatives and the development of products and services.
  • Work with TMS staff, volunteer/member committees and/or special project teams, to coordinate planning, develop content for agendas, and in some cases lead in-person, on-line or teleconference meetings.
  • Complete background research and report findings, as needed, to address the development and execution of TMS initiatives, products, and services.
  • Assist TMS staff and volunteers on projects as needs arise.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at UC Irvine seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in the area of Solid Mechanics and Structural Materials. Candidates should ideally demonstrate the ability to build an active interdisciplinary research program in one of the following areas where MAE seeks to broaden its research portfolio:

1. Computational mechanics and materials science, including in the areas of mesoscale modeling of deformation and materials processing, data-driven approaches to materials discovery and synthesis, and multi-scale and multi-functional modeling.

2. In situ and in operando experimentation, including the development and deployment of new techniques compatible with electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction methods, to leverage recent investments in materials characterization facilities at UCI.

Research approaches that combine analytical/numerical and experimental techniques are particularly desirable. The above research areas notwithstanding, MAE primarily seeks energetic and impactful researchers, and so excellent candidates with expertise in any and all areas of solid mechanics and structural materials are welcome. Grand Valley State University

The School of Engineering within Grand Valley State University’s Seymour and Esther Padnos College of Engineering and Computing invites applications for a tenure-track Faculty position at the Assistant / Associate Professor level. The position is within the Product Design and Manufacturing engineering program covering the general areas of materials and processes.

This position will support the continued growth of GVSU’s Product Design and Manufacturing engineering program which has doubled in size in the last 5 years. The Product Design and Manufacturing engineering program leads to an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) and Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) degrees. The BSE program includes mandatory co-op education experiences and an extensive experiential learning component. The MSE program emphasizes professional practice as well as applied research. Supported by the local industry, these programs yield career-ready, as well as graduate-school ready, engineering graduates.

Applicants must have a doctorate in manufacturing engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience, particularly in the areas of materials science, processes, as well as industrial and/or project-based experience in these areas.

This position involves teaching and industrial experience as well as experience related to recruiting and supervising industrial grade projects. All candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be committed to the highest quality of laboratory and project-based teaching along with scholarly and professional development. The ability to teach broadly in one’s field, and a passion for continuous improvement of the curriculum are desired. An ability to participate in and capitalize upon existing collaborations with industrial partners and a history of external funding are highly valued.

The GVSU BSE programs consist of project intensive ABET-accredited majors in Computer, Electrical, Interdisciplinary, Mechanical, and Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering, with mandatory co-op education experiences. Engineering enrollment, currently over 1,200 students, has experienced consistent growth that is expected to continue. All of our engineering programs are supported by industrial-grade laboratories, machine shops, and equipment in over 80,000 square feet of state-of-the art facilities in the Kennedy Hall of Engineering and the Keller Engineering Laboratories.

The School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania initiated a period of significant growth in 2015 that has resulted in 30 new faculty hires of which four are in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.  The department is continuing this aggressive, multi-year hiring effort by seeking a tenure-track assistant professor.  Exceptional applicants for tenured associate and full professor positions may also be considered.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the area of mechanical behavior of advanced structural materials.  Although candidates at the assistant professor level are preferred, exceptionally well qualified candidates will be considered for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to interface with growing interests and capabilities at the University in mechanical phenomena at very small scales (micro- and nano-) and how they influence and control macro-scale deformation and failure. Relevant expertise includes new mechanical testing methods, including those used at small scales, and advanced microstructural characterization techniques for examining deformation microstructures. The successful applicant will be required to teach, advise and mentor graduate students; develop an independent, externally funded research program; participate in all aspects of the department’s activities, and serve the profession. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION 
THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO

A postdoctoral research position is available starting Fall 2017 in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of New Mexico. The research of the prospective candidate will focus on development and characterization of nanocomposites for applications at very high irradiation doses and high temperatures. The research is funded by a recent Department of Energy Nuclear Energy University Programs (NEUP) award in collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

The applicant is expected to hold a PhD degree in Nuclear Eng., Materials Science or related disciplines with at least two years of Transmission Electron Microscopy, Focus Ion Beam, and Nanomechanical characterization experience. Macroscale mechanical testing, familiarity with nanomaterials and ion beam irradiations are desired skills.

The Extreme Materials group (http://anderoglu.unm.edu/) at UNM works on development, qualification, testing and characterization of materials for current and next generation nuclear reactors. Therefore, the candidate will be exposed to many diverse research areas.
