Harnessing Materials Innovations to Support Next Generation Manufacturing Technologies

A TMS-MForesight Workshop Report

More than 40 leading experts and stakeholders in the materials-related manufacturing community convened in October 2017 to forecast and brainstorm key technological breakthroughs supporting the next wave of U.S. manufacturing. The ideas generated by this workshop are documented in Harnessing Materials Innovations to Support Next Generation Manufacturing Technologies, available for free download through TMS. In addition to presenting thought-provoking insights into the potential future of manufacturing innovation, this technical report outlines actionable pathways and tactics identified to reach that future. This project is organized by TMS, on behalf of the Alliance for Manufacturing Foresight (MForesight).

Workshop Plenary Presentation

"GE Perspectives on Material-Manufacturing Innovations and Intersections"
Luana Iorio, General Manager, Materials & Process Engineering, GE Aviation

Luana Iorio has responsibility for the entire life cycle of the materials used in the 60,000+ GE turbine engines that power both commercial and military aircraft. Her team develops novel material systems and processing techniques, spanning a range of materials including superalloys, ceramic matrix composites and coatings, provides application engineering and material behavior assessments and develops and applies component life management methods. A recording of her plenary presentation at the Harnessing Materials Innovations to Support Next Generation Manufacturing Technologies workshop will be available in early December for free download.
