JOM: Volume 48, Number 10--October 1996

Sound Icon Film Icon This month's featured web article presents the history of steelmaking according to Squonk Opera; it features audio and QuickTime clips.

ABOUT THE COVER
Recent developments in high-critical temperature superconductors have enabled scientists to improve the performance of these materials while expanding application potential. This issue of JOM reviews some of those developments. In keeping with this theme, the cover shows scientist Ulrich Welp using the magnetic flux imaging system invented jointly by Argonne National Laboratory, Phase Metrics of San Diego, and the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. Here, the device is being used to pinpoint the location of flaws in superconducting wire.
