Powder Metallurgy: The Preferred Metal Forming Solution (2009)
Metal Powder Industries Federation, Princeton, New Jersey. 2009. DVD.
| REVIEWED BY: | Puneet Singh Gill, Florida International University |
Metallurgy as a science is as ancient as the very humans. Ancient civilizations have contributed a lot for the incipient stages, thus making it a really developed field. It has been fulfilling the demands for tougher and complex shapes for the ever advancing technological implements. Powder metallurgy is one such branch that forms the corner stone of the mainstream field. It is a fabrication technique that has expanded greatly over the last 100 years. It encompasses the intricacies in integrating materials at both micro and macro level. This CD highlights some of the major perspectives that are inalienable for the field. It entails both the basic theory and the application practices. It covers lots of examples with detailed pictures which can help even a lay man to understand the importance of this technique.
The CD is well structured with very good illustrations. It discusses the different techniques of fabricating power metallurgy parts with respect to its densities. It demonstrates different powder metallurgy techniques in detail. Powder metallurgy has great potentials for forming unique or complex shapes and further eliminating or reducing machining and scraps. The CD discusses that powder metallurgy technique shows very good repeatability and manufactured parts can also be modified to some extent.
This CD as a synopsis can serve as an introductory part for powder metallurgy in metallurgy or materials course for students, researchers and industries, interested in utilizing this novel technology. This CD also illustrates how an industry or researchers can choose the right material and design with the help of software, which further reduces failure tendencies. The information provided effectively adds to existing literature with regards to such selection techniques. This CD serves as a versatile source of information for companies, researchers and students equally, who are in constant pursuit of narrowing the knowledge barriers between amateurs and intellectuals. In fact this CD could also be used in high schools to show the evolution of powder metallurgy in our day to day life. In summary, it serves as a very precise and concise and yet extremely valuable source of information.
