Successful Impact Test Conducted at Sandia

Posted on: 01/23/2014
A ground-penetrating test B61-11 bomb, minus its nuclear components, passed the first rocket-driven impact test in seven years at Sandia National Laboratories.

Engineers said the components on the weapon performed as expected, ramming through a target at a remote test range. Annual surveillance programs for each weapon type consist of flight tests, lab tests, and component and material tests, with Sandia picking random units from its stockpile for testing. Data from the test will be used to update the annual assessment of the nation’s stockpile.
